My mate is looking at buying a convertible as a little something for the weekend.

Having persuaded him to move the budget from £1500 to £2500, BMW Z3s have come onto his radar.

So, what are they like, a heard they were a bit soft and squidgy? Any faults/things to look out for.

Any viable alternatives? Anyone saying MX5 shall be flayed over a gun carriage, and I would rather steer clear of MR2 roadsters, as I am getting one and I don't want to look like we have 'his and his' cars.

Cheers in advance

Get his and his cars...

There really isn't a viable fun car out there for the £1500 mark other than an MX5.

Caring about what other people think? Tsk....

Many years ago I went from a new Mk1 MX5 to a new Z3 as a daily driver. I preferred everything about the BMW but have never professed to be Michael Schumacher.

I think they always have had a very unfair press.

I've owned a Z3, MX5 mk1, and now a mk3 MX5

The Z3 is a good car, fine as an everyday driver. It doesn't have the handling of an MX5, but then it was never designed to; it is good value. Personally I love the looks - especially the front wings. It is a well built car. Parts are fairly easily available, and the engines are solid.

Head over to Z3 owners (http://www.zroadster.net/forum/portal.php) - many people there have owned or evaluated both.
