I have bought a car privately that was registered from new on a cherished reg. The seller left the reg on the car and sold it to me with the reg. Lets say this reg is XX1.

I have my own reg on retention that I want to put on to this car. Lets say this reg is AB1.

I could make some money if I sell the reg that came with the car (XX1) as it's car specific.

Whats the best way to go about this?

If I send the DVLA my personal reg (AB1) and they then register this against this car - when I take this reg off in the future will the car revert back to the cherished plate the car was initially registered on (XX1)or will they give me a generic number plate like AB10 XYZ? If that happens do we loose the plate XX1!?

If I want to sell XX1 now do I need to first apply for this to come on to retention go to a generic AB10 XYZ plate then apply for my plate AB1 to go on to the car?

Is there any other way round - its all so complicated LOL

1. Put XX1 on retention

2. Put AB1 on the car when XX1 has gone onto retention

3. Sell XX1 on retention if required

4. Don't say 'LOL' in a serious post unless you are actually 12 years old wink
