What is a rDAC?

Hi,

Simple question I know... I dont know what they are.

My current set up is a pair of B&W 602 S3 speakers, Naim 5i, Naim CD5i. I have a TV in the same room as the hifi.

The speakers are on either side of the TV, the hifi is about 4/5 metres away from the TV.

What is a rDAC? Are they any good?

Basically it's a Digital Audio Converter or DAC. It's been designed to take the digital stream from a Computer, CD/DVD/BD Player or a Streamer device and convert the signal into one you can feed into the RCA inputs of your AMP. There is a version that connects via Wireless as well.

This one is relatively cheap and really designed to work between a compute and your Amp. It has inputs for Disc spinners and streamers so you just need to buy the one device.

I suspect you're talking about the Arcam rDAC

It's a DAC that will convert a digital source such as a CD/network streamer/DAB Radio to analogue that your amp can play.

Having said that, your CD player doesn't have a digital output so a DAC will be useless for this purpose, but having said that the built in DAC on that CD player will be pretty damn good. An rDAC (or any other DAC) will benefit a streamer if you're planning on getting one and also your TV, although probably not worth it just for the TV alone.
