BMW 640d M sport v VW Scirrocco R?!
Discussion
Been flicking through my car mags having read the review on PH about the 740d sport and being rather struck by a comment made by a PH'er who had test driven it. He said "wasnt the wall of torque I was expecting". I thought, surely he cant be serious, this is one very fast car, or is it?
Came across autocar road test of VW Scirrocco R. Tested in cold, damp greasy conditions it was 1.2 secs slower than the 640 (tested in warmer, dry conditions) from 0-60. However, from then on, the BM doesnt have its own way and the 0-140 times are just 0.3 secs apart, with the modestly 2 litre powered petrol Scirocco just having the edge. Ah, but the BM is way more economical you say, but perhaps not as much as you think. Despite a claimed 51 MPG figure, the 640 averaged 32.6 MPG on test and just 12.9 on track, the scirocco, 28 MPG and 9.5 respectively, against its 34 MPG claimed figure. Hardly that much different then in spirited driving.
So what I am saying is this really, the 640d is a very accomplished diesel powered coupe but for £75 grand, if it struggles to see off a £30 grand 2 litre coupe, is it actually quick enough to satisfy an increasingly power crazed car buying public?!!! And how the fig are BMW and the like continuing to con us with these stupid official government MPG figures??!!!
