Headlight washers driving me crazy

So I wash my car, dry it and it gleams at me. BUT two days later the windscreen is a bit dirty, so I hit the washer button for a second or so and a little fluid goes on the screen - followed by the headlight washers which wash the headlights, the bonnet, the wings, the mirrors and the windscreen again.

I did read in the manual that if you press a certain amount of times the headlight washers will come on but surely once isn't right! Any help please.
