Help? Lake Distric Route + advice
Discussion
a few of us are doing a bit of a UK rd trip in May. I'm tasked with arranging and had formed a great plan and routes to suit, except that as the numbers have grown i'm struggling to get a hotel in the original area for one of the nights.....SO i'm wondering about a slight change of direction for that night which would see us stop in the Penrith area.
I'd discounted the Lakes area as i thought that it might be too busy....but i'd welcome some thoughts and advice fro those in the know.
it's teh Fri before teh 1st weekend in May, we wont be earlybirds as its a days touring/driving that we'll be doing, not a 5am empty road blat. We would need to end up heading back into the Dales for the afternoons drive - roughly Hawes.
So the question is....are we likely to be sitting in queues of traffic pootling along at 20mph, or are we likely to be early enough in the season to catch some empty roads? we'll all be driving Caterhams/westies/ or 7 clones' and are after decent twisties where the cars should hopefully be able to stretch their legs!
second question - does anyone have a suggested route or one that i might adapt that is already in ITN format or poss gmaps that i coudl import into TYRE? bit of an ask i know, but having spent ages researching the original routes, i'm in need of a shortcut to weigh up the value of changing our plans. ( we'd have the capability to do about 3/3.5hrs worth of driving )
help and thoughts appreciated.

It should be fine around that time of year on at least some of the roads around Penrith. If you specifically want to go into the Lakes and see plenty of scenery it's dead easy to just head away from Penrith on the A66 then down towards Ambleside on the A591 and then head over Wrynose Pass out to the Western fringe of the Lakes then up the A595 and back along the A66 and/or A591 towards Penrith.
As an aside, if you're in the area and want some good scenery and fabbo roads head up the A686 towards Alston (may well be a bit slow) and then head down the B6277 towards Barnard Castle, it's a brilliant road but would leave a bit of a trip to get down to Hawes!

Sam many thanks...
i'd earmarked the b6277 when i originally did the planning for the leg that i'm thinking of revising Alnwick to Blackpool ( have struggled to find accomm for us all up in that part of teh world at sensible prices, hence thinking about cutting across to Penrith for that particular night.
Quick question, i think from memory that i'd planned on down south along the b6277 from Alston, but instead of goping all teh way to B/Castle had us turning off and heading through Grassholme, as i'd been recommended by someone to make sure that i got Tan Hill in the route....does that make sense to you ( or are you not so familiar with that road)....
