My pet hate - why do people drive around with only sidelights illuminated?

You missed my point - it was a genuine question. Considering the efficiency of electrical systems on vehicles these days, why not turn on dipped beams? If it`s dark enough to put lights on (presumably because you want to be seen), why not really stand out with a decent set. There must be plenty of bikers out there who would agree.

It bothers me when it`s raining - try looking in a water streaked, vibrating external mirror every five seconds to try and determine what is behind you.

There are some times in the evening - notably dusk/twilight - where dipped beam are just too bright. Sidelights do it much better.

Personally i think you should direct your venom at the front foglight brigade!

I'm with you now towman....

My gripe is people who turn their dipped beams on too early...Just as it's starting to go dar, you have several cars with sidelights on...a couple of knobs with no lights on and then someone with their dipped beams on....

whatever happened to "Be safe, Be seen". In the truck I have dipped beam on permanently (even in daylight), as do most of London`s buses. I refer my honourable friend to te question on the insurance claim form......."What lights were showing?".

Only other related gripe is bikers with FULL beam on permanently, now that IS a bloody menace.

towman..

I agree with you in part...

The full beam motorcyclist are dangers to themselves and everyone else..What happens is the motorist emerging from a junction, looks towards the biker...See him, but cannot judge the distance as he's blinded..result..crash.

The same applies with the dipped beams; just as it's going dark...they appear too bright and can often either make other motorist misjudge distance/speed or more often than not, completely hide other vehicles with side lights or no lights on, (which might be closer to you)..

Does that explain what I mean better?...

In daylight sidelights show little, so dipped lights can be of benefit. When it comes to dusk or if the roads are wet then dipped beams can be too bright. That is when sidelights should be used instead.

Its not a black/white thing. My rule is if oncoming dipped beams are hurting my eyes, then its not the right time for dipped lights and use sidelights.

I have noticed a lot of people using mainbeam in dull weather lately - thats a big "NO NEED" imo. I can never tell if they just forgot the last time they put their lights on it was in a dark lane or something...

Regarding when to put lights on, i often use the rule that switch to sidelights when its too dark to see instruments in the binnacle clearly. Not least because the dash lights allow you to see the speedo better. If ambient light is that bad chances are sidelights help your car stand out a bit.

I do drive a low down dark green car though, so need all the help i can get!

Very wise Buffalo...

The problem is; over half of the country's motorists don't know their arse from their elbow...(I've seen them hanging their arses out of the window, so I know what I'm talking about..)

A policeman once told me that if it was dark enough to put sidelights on, you may as well put dipped beams on. I follow his advice and only use sidelights if I pull into the side of the road for a while when it's dark.

SC - did you realise you posted this on the BMW foglight thread?

"some are fine people...I used to be one.. "

Had to carry it over for the laugh, cos Ted closed the thread. Didn`t get chance to post "And then you put the uniform on!"

Isn't that exactly why everyone should use dipped headlights? It's certainly an issue on the (many) single carriageway A roads where I live & drive. Your eyes adjust to headlights coming towards you so it's really not easy to see a car on parking lights only.

Sidelights are for parking not for driving on. (except are legal to do so in a streetlit 30 zone)

When people turn their sidelights on eg when it rains etc what exactly are they thinking as they are not bright enough to stand out enough to be seen.

So for driving, headlights or nolights simple as that,

And dakness is not the only time you can't be seen, in bright daylight where there is a large contrast eg under trees etc, has the same effect.
