Thanks to the Opposite Lock on the Queens Highway thread, I have spent the past hour or so looking at potential replacements for my Cinquecento which would allow me to have some tail out fun. I am in the unfortunate position, however, of not having much to spend (up to £2k max) and needing something big enough for two adults and two kids that will also be economical (35+mpg).

Other than an E36 I am struggling to think of much, and even then to get decent economy it would only be a 320 or a 323. Will they even step of out line?

They probably will step out of line, if the tyres are poor enough. Neither of the bottom end 3 series car will really be 'wild' though. It's a shame you need such a big car though, as you generally have to get a bit more power on the go for proper sideways action then, whereas even the rattiest MX5 will give you those sorts of thrills all day.

Wouldn't bother with the 320i. All the thirst of the 6 cyls but probably as quick as the 4 cyl 318iS.

I used to get mid 30s on a good motorway run in my old manual 328i. Quite a bit less in town though.

Buy a <£1k MR2 or MX5. Spend the rest on insurance/tax. Stick ditch finders on the rear wheels.

If you put it into a hedge backwards, your wife can pick you up in your Cinquecento and take you to the pub where you can look at a replacement on the classifieds with a pint thumbup

You say that, but I was almoast unable to get my 1.6 1990 mx5's tail out in the 5 years I was driving it as a daily.

I don't need big necessarily (the Cinq. is big enough for the very occasional times we all get in it), but I don't think two seaters are an option at the moment, otherwise an MX5 would have been the default choice.

Tyres were too good. Especially if you couldn't do it in the wet smile

As above, I wouldn't get the 320 e36. The 318is (not 318i) is probably your best bet of the e36s, given your mpg requirements.

There'll be sod all difference in mpg across the 6 cylinder models. If you're going for the full 6, you might as well get a 328.

My MX5 used to slide about all the time. Mind you, it had Pirelli P6000's on the back, might as well have just slicked the wheels with grease!

Ford Sierra 2,0 DOHC. Doesn't come much cheaper than that.

Why all the MX5 / MR2 chat? The OP is clear he wants 4 seats.

Becuase people are often inclined to overlook the requirement for seats when it comes to fun. And I'd take a two seater for fun any day, certainly over a saloon type RWD. After all, there is something about sitting with your arse so close to back wheel that supplies supreme command of what the car is doing! hehe

Pics to follow according to seller, but looks promising, can only go up in value imo. Advert 1 day old.
