Afternoon all.

Not sure if this is GG or SP&L ... but I had an interesting development this week having just taken out a multi-car policy.

Summary (for the terminally lazy):

Multi-car policy ... website let me chose options it appears it shouldn't ... insurer wants me to prove NCB for named driver who previously had company car ... insurer wants another £900 if I can't.

The Detailed version (for the insomniacs and terminally bored on a Friday):

I had a letter through the post from Aviva asking me to provide proof of no claims for myself within 30 days of receipt of the letter. Not a problem, but a little odd as I had just converted a single car policy - which I'd had with them for 6 months. Unfortunately I had misplaced the letter with the address on, so I decided to give them a quick call to check it - big mistake!

In doing so (and causing them to look up my details), the chap said that I had used my no claims twice on the policy and this wasn't allowed. He then said that I needed to prove the 5 years no claims for myself (as per the letter), and my wife (not on the letter). This is problematic as the wife has just come from a company car, and she no longer works for the company the car was provided through.

I explained that I was confused, as I couldn't understand how this had happened as I had taken the policy out over the phone* - and that I'm sure I hadn't said the wife had 5 years NCB, because we didn't have proof of it.

  • I'd actually gone through the process of setting up the policy details over the phone, then realised they were going to charge me to use my credit card. So I got the reference number, moved some money to my debit account to avoid that charge and completed the process online by retrieving my quote.
He then said that if we couldn't prove the wife's NCD, beacuse the premium was calculated based on her with 5 years - they would want another £900 odd on top of the existing premium of around £700. That's more than other insurers are quoting for her on a standalone policy with 0 NCB.

However, I've since realised the following:

Aviva don't let you specify how many years no claims a named driver has, when adding them online. So even if they had entered that information from my phone conversation - there is no way I could have reviewed it before completing the process.

After you have added all your cars, they present you with a screen to decide who, of the drivers you have supplied details for, is the main driver on each vehicle and who is a named driver. The wording at the top of the page is approximately "you must be the main driver on one of the vehicles" (which obviously refers to the policy holder - me).

Having done some rough sums, we concluded that I would be the main driver on both vehicles (according to Aviva's criteria of who drives the most miles). Therefore I picked me as the main driver and my wife as the "additional driver".

Below each car, there is a box to stipulate how many years NCB the main driver has - which I selected 5 for both (as I am the main driver). There is nothing on the page to indicate that this isn't allowed and it doesn't prevent me from doing this as part of the quote process.

I'm posting my NCB proof off today, and waiting on a response from the lease company my wife's car was from. However I would really like an opinion on whether I am stuffed if I can't prove the wifes NCB - or whether I have reasonable grounds to challenge them?

Grateful for anyone who can summon the energy to comment having waded through all that.

MODS: This isn't a name and shame, and I know insurers have different ways of dealing with multi-car policies, so it's relevant to the topic.

Aviva rolleyes say no more.

They quoted me over 3 times the premimum I ended up paying when I got quotes in the last couple of weeks. I had a choice of 20 plus companies all quoting less than half their rate. This is for an ordinary shopping car with full NCD.

Their website was horrible to use too.
