The millionaire driver of a 911 Turbo that mowed down 2 men and killed them is not jailed after he offered to pay their widows off! http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-new...

Only in the USA! If you're rich enough justice need not apply it seems....shameful!

[The victims]Mr Watkinson had three children and Mr Elford had two.

The inquest heard they were walking back to their hotel on Seabreeze Boulevard at about 2.20am as LeVin was racing a BMW.

LeVin lost control and mounted the pavement, flinging the two men into the air and killing them instantly.

He sped off but the car was later found abandoned with a shattered windscreen, a dented bonnet and bumper and missing a headlight.

The inquest heard LeVin had been stopped by police and warned about his driving just five minutes before the fatal collision.

Throughout LeVin’s court case last summer, he chewed gum, offered no apology and asked to get his car back from the pound.

The judge told him to spit out his gum and look at pictures of his victim’s bodies.

LeVin is heir to online jewellery firm Park Lane, which has an annual income of $155 million.

He has a history of drug convictions, more than 50 motoring violations and at the time of the hit-and-run was on probation for a 2006 car chase that left one police officer and two motorists injured.

Under the conditions of his house arrest, LeVin is confined to his parents’ ocean-front apartment, which has a private beach, pool and gym.

if the widows have kids then they need the support. That's more than the state would have paid out so I see this a benefit to the widows. you say only in America yet here in the UK the state pays out fk all for these scenarios and leaves those left without their loved ones fked financially. For me if I had kids and were to be killed in a hit and run I'd rather my family get paid out by the killer and the killer less time in jail because right now that doesn't happen

why does the make of car he was driving matter in the least ?

if he was really rich it would have been a veyron/zonda/koenigzeggszesg etc

so the car just shows him as closer to well off rather than russian ogilarch

ETA : read it properly.. he's not even rich.. his family is, he just freeloads

Because this is a car forum? rolleyes

Good that the family got a pay out, bad that he escapes justice just because he can pay - morally wrong, disgraceful.

It was one or the other though, and that is the way it is. If he had gone down the widows would have got nothing for this.

no, they would have gone through the civil route and sued him following the criminal conviction.

This peckerhead did get 8 months in jail for violating parole on another case. This also mentions how the widows supported the ruling as it is the only way to secure the needed money. They could have sued him, but not knowing what they got paid, maybe they came out better. This type idiot will die young either by his own carlessness or by crossing the wrong person.

He makes perfect sense. He is attempting to use cynacism to make a point about your "only in America" quip.

He did go on a fair bit about taxation and the politics of envy beforehand though...

I found that this fool will be on ten years of probation, that is radical. No way he can behave that long. Looks to me like he will have a fedefal "three strikes and you're out" put on him in no time. That is a rap nobody escapes.....he will eventually do galactic time, if he lives that long.

To be fair, if he'd killed one of my family, I'd take his money, then use it constructively to determine his very short future. Easier to do that if he's out of jail... I'd be rather worried if I was him.

Before reading the unsavoury bits about his lack of remorse and respect; I actually thought what's the issue? 2 years house arrest, banned from driving for life and 1000 hours community service, as well as payment to the victims families seems as 'fair' as is reasonably possible? Dreadful, stupid, tragic accident etc.

However reading of his past and selfish attitude to (others') life makes me dearly hope what another poster on here says about the 'three strikes and you're out rule' catching up with him, comes around!

Yeah, I read something completely different into it, but could see why you came to this conclusion marquis. hence, the missunderstanding.
