Where did they all go? Do any exist any more?

Back in the 80s, mobile mechanics abounded during the explosions of both self-employment and franchising.

Was it just a bad idea? Is the British weather too unreliable for such work generally to be done outdoors? Or do punters prefer mechanics with bricks and mortar round them?

I would personally prefer to take my car to a garage. I also wonder if the very expensive diagnostic kit /computers required these days has driven a lot of small garages and home mechanics out of business.

I use two mobile mechanics and they are both excellent.

The last time one of them changed the alternator on a civic diesel on the street in the cold. Did an excellent job too.

Most cars can't really be jacked up any more, or at least not safely. I think a lot of the mobile mechanics moved to dent/SMART repair or diagnostics with varying levels of success.

I am mobile, work has just gone, no one is reparing anymore it seems, I have a couple of weekly contracts and a testers license or I would be in trouble at the moment.

I use a mobile Audi specialist for all servicing. Had cambelt, brakes, suspension, gearbox oil and other work done all to a very high quality.

Cars are hard to work on mobile compared to back in the 80s.

A lot of the mobiles that were making a living ended up in small units, the ones that weren't making a living are working for someone else now.

Strange.. I rang to ask about a clutch on a 206, said he'd get back to me but heard nothing.

Rang again and left a message, again nothing.

Figured he didn't need the work. Or would rather just do oil changes/basic servicing.

You think garages levitate cars into the air?
