So much choice and far too many ideas.
Discussion
When I joined this site I never really did a "hello, this is my first post" type of thing so I guess this is mine, no real point to it, just thought I would share my experience of this site so far.
After starting driving again about a year ago after a 7 year break (no need for a car in my job/situation) and buying a cheap fiesta mk 4 to get back into the swing of things last january as my daughter was on the way and with the missus not driving it seemed a good Idea to get a car again.
Had no interest in cars since I gave up driving but been a merchant navy engineer by trade and having re-built and worked on several classic bikes as projects during my leave it was only a matter of time before I got the car itch again.
Joined this site a few months ago as I was looking to change the fiesta for something newer, faster and shinier. Had a pretty good idea of what I wanted (warm/hot hatch, 5 yrs old/could throw the kid in the back, 10k max spend) and put a few what car threads out there.
Now every time I put a thread out there some one (usually more than one person) would point out some thing for peanuts, looked great and which had nothing to do with my spec, but got me thinking and dreaming, then my spec would change and change again and again.......
Been out of the loop for so long I am still amazed at how much car you can get for your money when you put the effort in and when strolling round forecourts you would never know!
Cannot believe how much choice there is out there and what can be had on a limited budget and every time I search the classifieds I am just as confused as I always find something that gives me even more ideas.
So much choice! do I blow the whole 10k on a newish hatch, do I buy a track day beater and a sensible family hatch for ferrying about the missus and kid, do I stick with the fiesta, fixing it with scrappy parts until it dies and get a track day special as well, do I go classic and get something like a capri for fun and a family hatch as well. Do I buy a project and build my own hot hatch, do I buy a barge and a banger for fun and save 8k, do I go down the "proper car route" and learn how to put the power down in a low-ish powered rear wheel drive???????
Do I buy newish and put up with massive depreciation or do I go oldish and fix it when it brakes, do I care about mpg???? not really but more is better. Do I worry about insurance or just go for what I really want (probably the latter)?
The other problem here is that the longer I wait to buy a new car/cars the more money I have in my new car fund and the more choices it opens up to me, its a vicious cycle of indecision and confusion and I wouldn't have it any other way! I'm loving every minute of it and love doing the research and finding out about spec/model type, possible mods to carry out, problems others have had withe there cars etc and love reading the forums and getting new Ideas. Have test driven a few, discounted a few more, but for every car I cross off my short list I add about four more to try!
The only problem is will I ever get round to buying a new car!

Daughter on the way? Get the new car now, whatever it is, before your new car fund turns into the daughter's pony fund
daughters arrived now, The missus has already appropriated half the fund for a wedding and christening.

you can live in a GTR honest
Well technically she doesn't have half the budget. We agreed whatever I spend on cars she can spend on a wedding.
So if I go for my current idea of the day, keeping the 5 door fiesta and buying a puma engined 3 door fiesta with most of the mods needed to start doing track days or similar stripped out 106,205, Saxo vtr/s etc. She may well have to have the reception at a harvester and the honeymoon in the premier inn
