Puma 1.7, if that counts as a hatch.

Rover 25 BRM.

The puma is worth a shout though, much better than a fiesta even one with a puma lump.

There are still plenty around that haven't been ruined by Max Power reading Halfords shoppers.

My choice would be a 306 GTI-6 if it had to be semi modern. Otherwise, a 205 GTI would be a better bet, particularly if you were an amateur mechanic as it will undoubtedly be the more fun to drive.

If I ever went back to FWD cars though, I'd like to try a 205 GTI (preferably a 1.9).

OR... a 205 with a GTI-6 lump hehe (probably not for a grand though)

206 GTi's arent too shaby and they really are coming into this price bracket a lot now though.

If i decide to keep mine and throw a few quid at it i think i wouldnt want rid.

You should be able to pick up a decent e36 318ti Compact for that kind of money these days. Might be considered more 'warm' than hot but they're a great drive and the engine is fun and revvy. Modify the factory airbox with a cold air feed, cat back exhaust and a remap and you're away. The ones with the factory M-sport kit are a lot nicer to look at - the standard look is a little frumpy but more of a sleeper.
