When my car is cold (E61 M5) starts from a standstill are fairly smooth and the engine speed only drops once as the throttle is pressed and the clutch engages so the net result is that the start is fairly smooth. But when the engine (and presumably the gearbox and clutch mech etc) are warm the engine speed drops two or three times as the throttle is pressed and the clutch engages making the car lurch slightly two or three times giving the impression of a driver who isn't very familiar with a clutch. But as its an SMG system I have no influence over things. I've tried the SMG reset (both paddles pulled in for 2 seconds when in neutral at 30 mph or thereabouts) to no avail. Any ideas?

Doesn't sound right, there maybe a little air leak somewhere, cold start enrichment negates this leak when cold so no rev drop, if I've read and understood your post correctly.

I think the engine's OK and that it's something in the clutch. You can imagine what happens when you start to release the clutch in a manual gearbox car - the revs drop so you feed in more throttle to prevent the engine from stalling. Not too much or the revs climb too high and not too little either. After a while you know just how to feed in the throttle and release the clutch pedal to achieve a smooth start. My car seems to do this OK when cold but when warm it feels like the clutch engagement is not linear so the car surges two or three times when pulling away. Very annoying!

Clutch mate. Is it juddering at all? Clutch position sensor could be out of puff.

Hi Eddie. No juddering, just a "lurchy" engagement from standstill when hot. Still love the old barge though - discovered the laugh of 3/4 throttle in 400 mode at perhaps 5K rpm and then going into 500 mode - feels like a turbo's kicked in!

Excuse my ignorance but I'm sure I've read that you will see no signs of judder or slippage of the clutch on one of these is on the way out? I say that because my E63 does judder, hesititate a little (maybe, it's hard to judge properly) when pulling away but it is VERY intimitant.

I really don't know what to make of it.

Sorry to thread hijack.
