So after 94k trouble free miles I'm giving our 2003 Polo diesel to our niece and nephew as they're taking lessons and will need a car.

So now I'll need a work-horse for my 200 mile a week commute.

So with a 5-6k budget it'll have to reliable, decent on petrol, easy for my missus to drive, an most importantly a little more interesting than the 1.9 non-turbo Polo it'll be replacing.

Saw this a while back and my missus really liked the look and price of it:

Pretty sure it would be reliable and well made, any known gremlins with them?

Any more suggestions? smile

3 series with the 20d engine?

Skoda Octavia vRS? (your missus will appreciate the familiar switchgear!)

Smart coupe / roadster?

How many seats do you need?

I helped the sister in law haggle on a 58 plate 207cc on the weekend and it seemed like quite a nice little car. It ended up costing £6500 from a main stealer with 38k on the clock so not a bad purchase. They look pretty good, reasonably nippy (120bhp) while still remaining echonomical although may lack practicality. General reviews seem ok and I quite liked it myself too.

It may just be a little too girlie though!!

My next door neighbour used to have one, so she's aware it wouldn't be a 'normal' work-horse and nothing like the Polo. hehe

I'd really like one to be honest. Honda reliability a good selling point to my wife? scratchchin

laugh Had a feeling you might!!

How about this then:

The only real down side to the car would be economy unless you wouldn't mind something with more miles on it then a 2ltr diesel is well within your budget:

Lovely looking car and without the girlie factor this time!

Type R was my first though, but I'm biased and it's often my first idea for this price range. Damn good choice though.

Or there is the Astra, cheaper than the Ford but nowhere near as pretty:

Evil.soup, not really keen on Fords to be honest and couldn't see myself owning one ever. You know how it is with brands you just have an irrational meh about. smile

Thanks for the Type R suggestion, really didn't enter my head at all, confused which is why these threads can actually be quite helpful.

So just sent this link to my Mrs, saying it could be good to go for a bit of Japanese reliability:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3652338.htm (I prefer the face-lift cars). Obvioulsy not that one, but she'll get the gist of what I/we should be after.

Haven't heard back from her yet though...

Well the Type-R is a great piece of kit and given the choice I would buy it over the drop tops, I was just thinking of your wife.....................not actually thinking of your wife of course but having to sell the idea to the wife!!biggrin

Apologies in advance for being boring however what about a 320d compact. 60 takes just 8.9, should be comfy enough, reliable and combined fuel economy 50mpg. A good step up from a Polo. The only issue as with all diesels at this budget is finding one that isn't too leggy.

I'd also recommend an MR2 (as long as you don't need 4 seats or a boot) group 11 insurance, 38 mpg, cheap to service (between £100 - £200), more reiable than the tides and seriously good fun. For 5k you should be able to find a well looked after one with circa 50k.
