...what car?

In my daydream I want to leave Britain. Head north and drive through sweden and Finland, head south through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, visit family in Poland and head east. I'd go to Kazakhstan but avoid the other stan country's and any places I'm likely to be blown up. Perhaps dip into Nepal and India then across into Thailand and meander around that area of Cambodia/Vietnam etc.. It would be nice to nip across to the Philippines and the other islands but I'd also be happy to drive up to hong kong then into Japan. Drive north to the road of bones like Ewan and his silly friend then give the car to a local and board a plane to Alaska where I would get something suitably American to smoke back home and plan my next trip.

My first weapon of choice is a LWB defender with some sort of bed in the back or a roof top tent. Of course it would have knobbly tires and a snorkel.

Second choice is a vw transporter 4motion/synchro thing with full on camping conversion.

The wild card is between a Bedford rascal or Mazda mx5.

I considered doing this and decided upon a 4x4 pick up with an Enduro bike on the back.

I even bought both vehicles (Hi Lux and Yamaha TT600 - older versions so simpler to fix)

but then got married.

First thought would be a 4x4 camper van - like a Delicia.

wow. If you do this please please keep a blog for us to read!

I have just come back from Thailand and even the flight made me realise just how bloody far away the place is.

Amazing country though with amazing people - been back in the UK for 48 hours and had enough already.

Good Luck thumbup

I'd take a TVR Chimaera!

Do the AA cover for international travel?

Hilux. Possibly a Defender.
You want something robust, but if it does break, you want it to be mechanically simple and easy to fix, with good parts availability.

Landcruiser with a diesel engine that'll run on just about any of the crappy fuel you're likely to encounter. Very reliable, simple to fix and so ubiquitous in the southern hemisphere you'll be able to get parts like driveshafts relatively easily.

If you want to while away a few hours have a look at this site:

http://freshwaterfilter.blogspot.com/

They drove to Singapore and back in a Citroen ZX - (which I believe is still running)
