TVRs in Oz

Hi,
I'm just doing a bit of ground work on TVRs in australia - is there much of a TVR presence in Australia? I've never seen one (in NSW/QLD - but they'd be a cracking car with all that open, sunny road out there/here.)

I'm looking to ship my T350c out to Oz in the next week or so. Anyone have any experience of this - or indeed from Australia?

The Arb's Sagaris sold in Oz - the owner is on here. I think there is a Tamora in Brisbane? Maybe?

So rare - the import taxes are horrific IIRC.

A nice collection of TVRs in Perth, Western Australia. They attend annual meetings of well run classic car shows. Classic British cars very popular. Aussie owners of MG cars had a barbeque tent festooned with Union Jack flags all around the perimiter. There's patriotism for you! Saw some nice imported Griffs and Chimps. There is a TVR club in Perth. Petrol is about a third of our price, but buy it mid week. A Griff can cost 30K to buy out there.

My old 390SE in Moonraker Black arrived in Perth Oz feb 2011 having sold it to a gent out there. Allegedly he has a few interesting cars in his collection. Although I've seen no postings or images since it left our shores in Dec 2010.

There are a few of us on the road here in NSW. There are 2 of us in the Hunter Valley and more on the central coast and in Sydney.

This is a useful thread in the Australia forum Importing a car to Australia and there are a number of people who can help with getting the car on the road over here. I found it useful to have a load of adverts from PH in the UK with me when I went down to meet the valuer at the bonded warehouse. He converted the UK price, deducted some as its an import and I paid import duty on that (well less than the luxury car tax threshold.

I have now found a decent mechanic who can use Mr Varley's good reference for the Sag and interpret it for the Tuscan.

Bring the car over - car are expensive over here and a new toy will cost you more than 50% more than in the UK.

I have heard a rumour that if you have owned the car for more than a year there is no import tax to pay.

Tvr malaysia where able and allowed to sell completed chims in oz but not sure how many if any made it there.

I am looking to take my Tusc mk2 S out there in 18mths and am doing ground work.Look in the poms in oz forums for a chap called ironchef ,he has a company that sorts paperwork and duty etc etc the whole process is a minefield of red tape and forms.Try him for info, btw there are quite a few Tivs over there.

Had my Tuscan Mk 1 in Canberra for nearly 5 yrs now. If you'd own your car for more than 12 months and pass the requirements for personal import then bringing the car into Oz is very easy. Its covered in the Australia forum here extensively.

My only advise is to get a good Import Agent that will arrange all the paper work required for Customs and Quarantine, arrange steam cleaning for your car at the docks, arrange for a licenced valuer to get a Landed Value for Customs Duty and GST, Make Payments on your behalf and arrange for you car to be transported to where ever you need it. The import agent will charge about $300 for his work. Money really well spent.

p4pedro - yes, i think exporting a single car that you've owned for some time constitutes as a 'personal allowance' or equivalent.

Choose an oz shipping agent. They know the import ropes and the US $ shipping costs and are less greedy than some UK agents. Takes quoted 4-6 weeks from Southampton to Fremantle via possible change at Singapore. Check roll on/roll off, or container share.
