Just picked up on this from another thread.
Answer needed for a friend*.

If you get a FPN (3 points) for an SP30 do you need to tell your current insurer or just tell them at renewal?

What happens if my friend doesn't tell them?

The bib said only had to do it at renenwal but now not so sure he was right.

*Hello insurance company!

Tell them now. It's a change to your circumstances, and they must be told, otherwise it might invalidate the insurance. It almost certainly won't make any difference to the premium for the remainder of the year - recently had to so this for Mrs Sorcerer, and Direct Line couldn't care less. They said everyone had at least 3 points nowadays...

Depends on the small print in your insurance; some don't car until renewal whilst others want to know straight away.

although pdV6 is correct in what he says, I would err on the side of caution.

If you were to have an accident in the meantime and you'd not informed your insurance firm of your SP30, I can't help but worry that might use that fact to lessen the amount they pay out.

I'm cynical, but unfortuanately proved right at times..

Without a doubt insurance companies offer the worst service of all industries.

ANd their advertisements all claim that they"may" be able to get you 30% discount on your current policy but yet when you call them they are all dearer.
So bloody annoying. Im not surprised there are so many people without insurance.
Third party insurance should come with your Tax like it does in Australia. At least that way everyone would be insured and it wouldnt be compulsory to join the phone queue.

You should most definitely inform your insurance company..

However, depending on who your cover is with, it may not get added to your policy mid term, not all insurance companies are able to do so.. (limitations of the system and all that) so a diary note would be made and the offence added at renewal..

(work in the trade you see!)

I must be the best risk for an insurance man:

i) In my 30s, Married with children,
ii) 10 years no claim discount,
iii)No accident or convictions,
iv) Car is Skoda Octavia, alarmed & immobilised,
v) My postcode area is quite low crime,
vi) The car is garaged.
vii)I do less that 12000 miles a year (in my private
car)
viii)Police advanced driver.

Yet I still have some riduculous quotes at renewal. I always managed to find one that's good, but the ones I discount are taking the piss.

www.elephant.co.uk was the cheapest by far this year.

Statistically a very safe bet for the insurance company, so your stake in their lottery doesn't cost much!

Maybe not.....

i In my 30s, single (no kids to have to batter while driving)
ii 21 years driving, never made a claim (except it wasn't me...)
iii insurance companies not interested in a couple of sp codes (same as having a tax code)
iv ancient peugot, very alarming, and not worth nicking
v my postcode area VERY low crime (can you leave your keys in your car at night ?)
vi garage has stuff worth something locked in it
vii less than 3000 miles per year in my car ( why is Gatwick SO far away?)
viii No need to outrun police advanced drivers, as there are so few left down here........joke.

The thing I find a pain in the arse, is you get a stupid quote, something like three times the amount I'm already paying, I tell them to shove it, then they feel they can bombard me with junk mail for the rest of my life.

BTW give hastings direct a try £114 a year fully comp??????? is it worth phoning round at that price?
Edited to add, when I asked them for the 3rd party price it was £176

If you get a few through the door at once and one of them has a prepaid envelope stick it all in the envelope and send it back

I started sending stuff to a credit card company that were hassling me weekly. I started sending them loads with "STOP SENDING ME JUNK" written on it and they stopped!

Will start today

To go back to the original thread though, Whenever I have picked up an sp code (not always sp30, different code for HGV's) phoned the insurance company, and they were not interested. In fact they told me I could have 2 before they up the insurance. I jokingly asked "many people got them ?".........the answer "an increasing number" seemed to sum up the changing attitude to motorists.

I suspect this might not necessarily be a good thing.

Don't send stuff back to them, send it to other junk mailers (make sure there is nothing with your address on it). I don't mind junk mailers - it supports the post office, doubly so if you return something in their envelope.

Just did a quick silly quote on our system
Me on a Chimera = 2783.58
Me on a Chimera as a police officer = 2570.40

Just requoted, ...

Police = 2405.22
HGV = 2405.22

Unfortunately, haven't got the ability to enter license categories on the part of the system I'm using.. grrrr..

So these aren't the most reliable of quotes for this example!!

other stuff tho, I should be able to do..

btw, Mrs S is leaving here to go work @ a brokers, so we'll see how competitive they are for PH cars.. if they're good, I'll let folks have her details..
