Discussion
After a conversation at the Motorsport Show where a few of us were talking about what engine configuration we had owned it became clear that I have been remiss in never owning a V8.
TVRs, Masteratis spring to mind, but then I think I will have to drive whatever I own during Scottish winters (though the 996 has managed so far this year) be friendly for a chap of advancing years to get in and out of and rely on to actually get me to work while not being a money pit, so I then think Monaro, Range Rover, X5, M5, big Merc.
American cars too have been getting a quick consideration and equally quickly discarded as wrong hand drive.
Any other ideas on what I could get with a V8 for under 17Kish before I go and throw cash at a Range Rover.

For me, there's something very wonderful about a big wafty V8! Yes, your TVRs might deliver epic fun, but even more fun for me is rocking up at lights in my 14 year old 4litre XJ8, flicking the auto box into Sport Mode, turning of the TC, and embarrassing the young upstart next to me in their Boxster
The way a big V8 gathers pace is truly wonderful, and the V8 soundtrack is a masterpiece of aural pleasure.
In your budget, I'd be looking at a very smart XJR

There are about a million choices for a V8 for £17k or under. Maybe you could be helpful and guide the suggestions to the type of car you want?Aside from that, how about an American V8 which is RHD and not a Range Rover?
6.1 litre Hemi SRT8
Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.1 V8 SRT-8 5DR AUTO SAT NAV/ROOF (2008)
61,000 miles £16,950

I was thinking big perol 4x4 so a Cherokee is certainly an option, but the XJR and XKRs are both tempting, never been an Audi fan for some reason but some of them could be tempting too.
If I just went and got what I fancied it would probably be Maserati 4200, but servicing and stories of expensive things going wrong put me off.
Just looking for ideas at the moment, and that is what I am getting - Good Old PH

Actually, 300bhp reminded me of another yank V8 you could get in budget with RHD - Chrysler 300c (either the 5.7 Hemi, or the SRT8 which EVO mag rated rather well).
Or for well under budget, you could look at the MG ZT v8, and use the change for a supercharger (or lots and lots of petrol).
Alpina of some sort could be a fun alternative too.

I guess knowing what you'll use it for is important though.

Not knocking a Range Rover, but unless you plan to mod it you'd almost not know it was a V8. Same with something like an X5 or many big luxo barges.
So some question to ask yourself:
-Do you want comfort or entertainment?
-How many people will you need to carry in it and how often?
-Will you need to haul anything in it?
-What types of roads will it be driven on mostly? i.e. in town, B roads, motorway, etc.
-What is your driving style? Do you prefer relaxes or do you like hooligan? Do you want smooth handling, or something you'll have to tame?
-Are running costs an issue and how many miles a month/year will you be doing in it?
-Is depreciation an issue?
-Is image or perceived image important to you?
-Is vehicle age important?
I ask this, because there is a world of difference between an XKR and a Range Rover. But there are still loads and loads of potential options.
I know you've ruled out American cars already, but the reality is, they do the V8 thing very well, they also do the reliability and low running cost thing very well, and as a rule do the low depreciation thing very well too.
So bearing this in mind, have you actually tried a lhd vehicle in the UK? If not, would you at least consider giving one a go?

300C SRT 8 Wagon? Looks the mutts, sounds the mutts... Ok the interior is cheap, but its an epic car.
It looks like a hearse and drives like one too. Couple that with the awful interior (there is better build quality in a Ka) and I would avoid it like the plague.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
