Right, I'm moving into a new gaff in a week's time.

My missus actually said before I had the chance "We're going to need a bigger telly".

woohoo

So, I think my requirements are:

46-55 in
HD (watching via Sky+ HD)
WiFi linked and enabled for streaming such as iPlayer, 4OD etc. Software driven so next gen of OD services can be used.
Enabled for BT Vision (missus gets it for free, I assume it's a seperate box similar to Sky to I will need > 1 HDMI?)
I already have 3rd party surround sound processor with optical in driven from Sky, but I want to move output so it's driven by TV.

Nice to have:
3D
Internet browsing

Other info that may or may not be relevant:

Before I start a whole bunch of research, I thought I might take advantage of the PH collective brain on what brands/models/features/budgets should I be looking at. Last telly I bought just had to be HD and have HDMI. Now it's all complicated n that !

I've got a Samsung UE55D800 and I love it, the one bezel design is really sleak.

The picture on Sky HD is fantastic, clear and full of colour. Put on a BluRay (even 3D) and the picture is on another level, clarity is superb the 3D clear and smooth.

The comes with all the latest toys, Wifi, USB, Ethernet, 4 HDMI ports and if you get the Samsung bracket its like hanging a picture on the wall.

The only issue is some slight banding when watching football, but this seems to be a common issue on most LCD tv's.

Hope that helps.

Samsung D6000 series are getting rave reviews at the mo (me and mate both brought one in the last couple of months and have been very impressed).

  • Internet enabled (built in WiFi), with a browser which supports Flash (be warned that the browser is very slow though)
  • Built in search feature which searches the EPG + any PCs you've linked it up to for movies, music etc... (DNLA compliant)
  • Lots of apps - including iPlayer, YouTube, movie streaming services, etc..
  • 3D
  • You can buy a Skype camera to sit on top and turn it into a video calling hub
If you play lots and games and/or you're going watch a lot of 3D then you might be better of getting a Panasonic, but otherwise these are ace.

If you have got a big budget I would hold out for the OLED TV's they should be released soon, the LG screen is very nice.

Thanks all, looks like Samsung is the answer.

I've just got to get my head around the actual difference between the 800 quid and 2.5k models !

As for OLED. £6.5k? For a telly?
Don't think so smile
I can get myself a snotter for driving to the station in the snow instead for that money.

You need to identify if you want/need a plasma or a LCD first before looking at all the (mainly) useless gizmos.

Samsung 46" D8000 sitting in front of me now.

I didn't realise I hadn't actually been watching telly up until this point. Stunning.

Can't wait to test drive it with HD F1 at the weekend!

I have the same model as you and yep, it's pretty neat. I don't watch a huge amount of TV but what I do looks great (I don't have sky so use the Freeview channels and aerial only) and although people will say the image is over-processed, I think it looks simply stunning with Bluray.

If you haven't already bought a wall mount for it, I vaguely remember the Samsung mount being megabucks for just a length of twisted wire, two bolts, some plastic and two metal discs. I bought an almost identical kit from ebay for under £20, job done!

The Samsung is soooooooooo yesterday.

Check out the Panny Vt50, out next month.

the Samsung looks lovely, but if yuo want the best quality Screen, then the new Panny will be head and shoulders above. In fact the vt30 is way better now than the Samsung.

The vt50 is one of the most hotly anticipated TVs for a while.

Blacks will be out of this world.

Id say wait a month and check the reviews.

I had this decision in December. I looked at the Panny VT and the Samsung 55" D8000. Went Samsung and very very happy I did. It's a cracking TV.

Another vote for the D8000. Does it all. Fitted a portable drive to record with the other week. Have another connected for 3d and avi movies. When it starts recording with the TV off the Samsung logo lights up. Cool. Sorry like this sort of stuff. Plays everything I throw at it too.
