Hi All,

My family brought a car in 2010, and I am now going to take this car and insure it in my own name as the policy holder.

On an online insurance form, do I put 2010 or 2012 as the year of purchase?

Thank you

Where did they bring it from?

Not sure if dealer or private. Why would that matter?

'brought' instead of 'bought'.

Date purchased will probably mean the date it became your property, rather than someone else in the family.

Sorry, I was trying to be clever. Brought is the past tense of bring, bought is the past tense of buy. I think you meant they bought a car.

It doesn't answer your question but I have improved your English, so it's not a complete waste!

Is the V5 going to transfer into your name? If so then 2012.

ETA I know the V5 isn't proof of ownership

Who are you BUYING it off? Someone living at same address or not. Are you the new owner or just the new keeper ?

Basically when you write off the car, they will ask you for the original receipt, and make sure they pay less than that.

We were given a Cavalier by my Father in Law, which was worth £2500 at the time, and I always put Jan 2000 as year of purchase, despite the fact that I have been the named driver twice in that time, and my wife is now the named driver for her second time. (We have swapped use a bit)

Note that Father in Law purchased it in 1992.

Hi,

I'm not buying the car off anyone. It'll just be given to me, that is (from parents). No money involved. My parents live at the same address as me.

So V5 is logbook, as I'll be the registered keeper, I believe this document will get updated thus in my name.
