Perhaps some of you older chaps who know more about carbs can help me out a bit here.

I have a 1986 BMW 316. This is a 1.8 M10 engine with a Pierburg 2BE carb on it. Fishing around on the internet, and driving it, it turns on this carb is pretty rubbish.

Weber do a conversion kit for a 32/34 DMTL carb, which bolts straight onto the manifold, and I guess is jetted for the BMW. I can't seem to find much info on this carb but from little snippets about, it seems this is a worthwhile upgrade.

However, there seems to be a lot more info on people upgrading to a 32/26 DGV carb, and using the inlet manifold from an E21 or 2002 which has the stud pattern for the Weber, and hogging out the holes at the top of the manifold to fit the butterfly valves in. From what I gather though, the DGV is originally for ford pinto engines. Does this matter too much if the holes line up?

Most DGV's I can find on the internet are jetted for fords, but there seems to be some consistent info across forums about what sizes work well the BMW engine, albiet an older one.

What I'm basically looking for is an opinion on whether the 32/36 is worth it over the 32/34, and if anyone knows if a DGV will fit on an early M10 engine.

If I do get one, the engine will get a good service (eg vacuum pipes, ignition system and timing, valve clearences etc etc) and it's not modified in any other way.

So, does anyone have anything to offer?
