Tonight I came home from 5-a-side to find a dog on my driveway. She looks about 7/8/9 (a bit grey around the gills) and appears to be some sort of Staff cross. She's a lovely dog; does as she's told and is very friendly.

I've phoned the local vet, who didn't seem overly interested, and the local RSPCA Lost and Found number and left a message.

Anyway, we've brought her in and dried her off, I've been to the shop for some food (she's eaten a tin of Pedigree) and she's currently downstairs on a thick duvet with a little halogen heater for company.

I've put the word out on Facebook and asked local people to copy and paste it on theirs. What I'm wondering, though, is if there is much else I can do? I intend to take her to the vet tomorrow to let them scan for a chip if I take her in, but I can't see her having one for some reason. She has a collar but no tag.

Suggestions appreciated.

If she's collared and obedient then someone has cared and will want her back.
They'll probably be walking the streets so I think I'd put a sign in your front window saying that you've found a dog and put a poster in the vet and local kennels.

Ring the dog warden in the morning. They'll either collect her or have a vet/kennels you can drop her off at. She's their responsibility.

Phone your local radio station - they usually put out announcements about lost/found pets (it worked for us when we found a 'lost' dog a couple of years ago). Also ring your local police station, they won't take the dog from you but they will be able to get in touch with you if anyone contacts them about their lost dog.

I've found a few dogs over the years, the last being a pair of Staffies running around a reasonably busy main road. The local Council will have a dog warden, you need to contact them. They will likely arrange for a local kennels to come and pick the dog up. (They might well have a 24hr line for this sort of thing)

the owner of the two Staffies collected them the next morning, so all was well.

Otherwise 'responsible' owners are abandoning pets left right and centre due to the cost of boarding / feeding them.

I'd take the poor scrap in. Then contact a charity like Dogs Trust - if you can bear to to be parted from her cloud9

What do you want to do? Are you willing to keep the dog if no-one wants her?

You can just put flyers up in the local area if you are happy to keep her (and of course if there is no chip) in the meantime. I am assuming there isn't a metal tag on the collar with an address/phone number on it?

Sorry guys, only just had chance to check back. Thanks for all the replies.

I called the council and police this morning and left details with both, then called both local vets and did the same. Once I'd finished work I took her down to check for a chip but sadly nothing, so I went to the main shops on our local 'high street' and put up flyers.

I'm pleased to say her owner has just phoned me after seeing one in the newsagent smile So she'll be going home this afternoon. He sounded like a pretty old bloke and seemed really pleased we'd found her.

Thankfully; not what they said.

We've taken in lost dogs a few times, give our contact details to plod etc and have always had a greatful owner call within a few hours. No point in letting the local council cash in on someone else's distress. Up here that's £25 +£15 admin fee +£8 per day so well done op I'm sure the old guy can put that sort of money to better use.
