Me and the missus live in a decent area. Well by my standards anyway (ex-chav)...not that make a difference when it comes to thieving scum...

We paid a visit to one of her relatives who lives around 0.5 miles down the road from us. Apparently he was sold the house by a lottery winner who decided to move elsewhere with his new found wealth.

Before selling up the lottery winner had bought some new fangled £100k Porsche or something along those lines. To this day, 2 years after moving in...her relatives are still having their garage broken into by people thinking a lottery winner lives there!

Wife thinks anyone who buys a "high end" car is pretty much open to thieving. She used to be ex-CID so maybe she has a point?

Is it really that bad? Kinda puts me off. I'll be fkin heartbroken if they took my Skoda let alone a F430!

I think it is quite common tbh. Wouldn't put me off buying one though. A couple friends have had their houses broken into and cars stolen, although one had his house broken into for his Evo 9, they couldn't find the keys and left!

I think general location has more to do with it - I've never had an issue. Why don't you install some cameras if its a regular issue?

the solution is don't tell strangers you have a big stash of cash, if you don't know them don't tell them

it's like lottery winners going public, they are marking themselves out to be robbed

on the other hand, if you can afford a super car over £100k then you can afford £5k for some electric gates and beefed up security around your house

I leave our mid engined convertible parked outside an airport for two weeks, every month unlocked and no-one goes near it. Last month there was no road tax (by accident) on it and still, even the parky didn't give it a lookin.

Saying that, its an MGF, they probably thought the head gasket had gone or it had been dumped.

I wouldn't let it worry you, cars being stolen can happen to anyone anywhere. If you think that way you will never end up owning a nice car.Since I started driving 18 years ago,all my cars have been 'thief magnets' yet despite living in a town which doesn't have the best of reputations I have never had a car stolen or attempted to be stolen.

I did wake up one morning to find the lock on the door of an old girlfriends house busted, tho they didn't get in.We rang the police and the first thing he said was they are after the evo on the drive.

A lucky escape as I had left my keys on full view on the kitchen counter!

Deterents do help - neighbourhood watch, alarm systems, good locks and CCTV - but there is no substitute for being known as the holder of a firearms certificate and occasionally being seen taking guns and ammunition out of the boot of the car! smile

Probably more to do with the ex-lottery winner but garages are often targeted as they are easier to break into than houses and often contain quite valuable tools and equipment.

I've never had any problem at all with mine and we live on a semi-rural estate.

Thought there's some decent cash to be made from scrap metal nowadays? wink

I know someone who saved up a lot of money to buy a mk2 Focus RS. He didn't live in the best of areas but he wanted it so brought it. One day while he was at work he left the RS at home and someone broke into the house looking for the keys. Luckily he look them to work with him. However they just trashed the house when they couldn't find the keys.

I do think that certain cars seem to attract more attention for robbery than others. RS4's seem to be loved by robbers! Also evos and hot hatches seems to also be rather big targets.

Really? Around our way people who are known to have guns (farmers) get broken into quite a lot, generally to steal said firearms, and often any easily removed vehicles too.

I do not think it really matters where you live. If someone wants your car, they will endeavor to get it.
Is the relative able to put a window in their garage door so people can see there is no Porsche in there?
Out of curiosity, if your wife used to be ex CID, what is she now? I assume if she used to be ex CID, that she is CID again.

There's always potential for a nice car to be stolen. If you own a nice car it is up to you how much you try to deter potential thieves, from leaving it unlocked with the keys in on the street (your insurers may object to that!) to barricading the car and yourself into a fortress (who wants to live in that sort of place?).

Is it inevitable? No. Is it precisely what insurance is for? Yes.

She became disillusioned and left the force. She moved very fast up the ranks...but was not able to transfer near home due to the cuts.

She now runs her own Publishing/Printing/Distribution company. She really misses the comradeship of being a copper....just not the red tape...

Unlikely they trashed the house for that reason - probably looking for other stuff. No point breaking in and then putting the hoover round.

They are also BURGLARS, not robbers. Robbery is the use or threat of violence to obtain the required article.

I don't know about national statistics, but from anecdotal experience I would say car theft has gone right through the roof. The amount of houses being broken into in my area and also in other towns/cities just to get the keys to a car has dramatically increased.

It shouldn't stop you having a nice car, but make sure your property is secure.

is it illegal to have a telescopic hydraulic powered spike installed under the drivers seat of your car than you can activate via txt message to engage the next time the ignition is turned on.

you woulden't want the car back afterwards... but there's also the plus side of there being less chance of your next car getting nicked lol smile
