Mercedes launches new SL63 AMG in Barcelona

537hp version of Merc's high-end roadster gets F1 test unveil, but we can't tell you all about it just yet

Mercedes has (sort of) unveiled its new SL63 AMG at today's F1 test at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.

We say sort of, because although it has released a couple of pictures of the new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8, the full gen and picture set is under embargo until tomorrow. Even though we already know about it.

Then again, the SL63 AMG is a pretty important car for Mercedes, so perhaps it deserves two embargoes.

So we can't show you pictures of the new car (though you can pop over to see them on Autocar's story). We can tell you, however, that the new 'R231' SL63 will go on sale in the UK this June, with an aluminium and magnesium body that helps to save 125kg over its predecessor.

Engine-wise it's a return to the 5.5-litres and forced induction of the SL55 AMG and farewell to the much-loved 6.2-litre normally aspirated unit that shares its roots with the SLS's thunderous V8. As featured in cars like the E63, S63, CLS63 and others, it's turbos rather than the Kompressor of old providing the boost, power up to 537hp while fuel consumption drops by nearly a third over the old 6.2.

To make sure everybody knows you've got an AMG, there's a chunky, aggressive bodykit, including bespoke LED DRLs, a deep front bumper, a bootlip spoiler, tweaked sills and a rear bumper with an inbuilt diffuser. Oh, and quad tailpipes.

As for the rest of the detail on the car and more pics, well, you'll have to wait until tomorrow morning.

Sure it will be great - no point pining over big N/A engines.

This I assume, and I agree that it looks great (pic in Autocar link within story)

Looks lovely. Although what is it with manufacturers putting massive lights on cars these days?

Why can't PishonHeads show the pics but Autocar are allowed to?

Were they given exclusive rights?

I would think PistonHeads has a far bigger hit count than Autocar?

This would explain Autocar saying the E63 is better than the new M5 when 99% other publications disagree. Mercedes paid them to say so wink

Do you think this is the case?

The best way to let people know you drive an AMG would be if Merc would stop putting "AMG Styling" on the Bluemotion price list.... No exclusivity these days.

Well, that and the v8 blat coming from the back.

Because Mercedes PR just don't understand the internet?

Basically Autocar bought a story from Greg Kable, who was one of the 'select group' of journalists at Barcelona. But his story is in the public domain now, so we can publish what info he has. we just can't show you the pics or the full tech spec until tomorrow. Perverse, we know.

It's not just Merc, many manufacturers seem to be wedded to the idea that they can 'filter' information geographically or by publication. It's something that simply doesn't work in a post-print world, unfortunately.

To be fair, it's not a PR issue (certainly not a UK one) - I think responsibility for this attitude comes from further up the corporate food chain

Interesting. So they arent in Mercedes pocket wink

yeah, this would have worked years ago but not now. Personally I still like to buy mags for full road tests like EVO, CAR, AUTOCAR etc - as its nice to have physical copies of the mags to keep if there are tests of particular interest to you - ie - possible future purchases etc

I notice people on here often wonder if Autocar (and other mags) are in the pocket of A.N.other car maker. I can't speak for the others, but having worked at Autocar before I came to PH, I can honestly promise you that this is not the case smile.

The chaps and chapesses on the editorial team are a most thorough lot when it comes to maintaining objectivity (not an easy job in this game - we all have our penchants and phobias), though obviously things aren't quite as good as when I worked for 'em ... wink
