Best way to sell an SLR these days?

How are most people here moving their kit on these days?

eBid, facebook marketplace, still using eBay and bearing the high fees?

I generally have no idea how much to sell my kit for except using eBay completed as a guide but then whoever buys the stuff will probably be paying over the odds vs going elsewhere.


Are there any other good places that people trust but have a wide audience, but also more reasonable prices?

Happy to sell for less and pay lower fees so someone gets my stuff at a more reasonable price rather than eBay taking a big slice!

Already offered it via friends/family/local camera club but I might be waiting weeks/months.

This year, I am currently on my second Fleabay lens sale - a further lens and a body to sell.

Things seem quite bouyant on there. I just watched a lens sell for £216 compared to the same model being on offer in Grays of Westminster for £205 (and will personally be happy north of £150). The Fleabay lens was also accompanied by the most horrid, out-of-focus images you have ever seen!!! Some are even just resorting to stock images - so I don't think it's too difficult to get your items to shine on there.

Grays (if you are talking Nikon) will talk to me about p/ex but personally - even with Fleabay fees - private sales I can be patient for.

PH classifieds are good, but I don't think reach many.

Specialist forums (like Nikonians - other brands are available) all tend to be slap-it-on-and-chance-waiting-forever jobs.

all original boxes/bags etc

Pretty certain I'll be moving to a Sony A77 any time soon, so since the kit lens is 72mm I'll be hanging on to my filters/grad mounts etc...



That is the problem, eBay costs a lot but it does have a captive audience so it will actually sell and for what seems a good price, until the fees come along

Worst bit is if you split it to try get maximum worth you just pay more in fees anyway...


Someone needs to start their own selling site that is just for SLR type gear... I'm sure given time it'd take off. Just so fed up of eBay... not used it for years and suddenly it feels not so nice for selling for 'normal' people... just realised with listing fees, paypal fees, and the final payment fee, you might be about 15% down on most stuff!

Fair enough if you can generally sell for 15% more on eBay but it does all feel very silly... everyone gets shafted for eBay's margins basically

Not much more I suspect, and you're likely to get much better prices for each part - eg someone who wants the 18-200 but not the D70. I'd sell the lenses seperately and then the body with all the other bits.

Yes, but you can help by either waiting for a free listing day (though you still get done for final value fees which are the main bit). You can also look at the tiers and make sure you stay just under, eg £14.99 is lower than £15.00.

So you can sell it on eBay for £120, and pay 15% fees, and it will sell in a week.
Or you can list it for £100 somewhere else, and probably nothing will happen.

Yeah, having looked around it looks like eBay is the way to sell it if you actually want to sell it.

Just feels sad that both buyers and sellers lose out for that convenience. eBay once made lots of sense, now it looks like everyone pays for that convenience!

I hope someone else comes along soon and makes eBay go down the pan for being so greedy!

I'd say it's worth advertising on AV forums first. It's free and fairly active. I've sold gear on there pretty quickly.

Otherwise ebay it is. Fees are a bind though. I would still be inclined to sell everything separately. I tend to list on a sunday evening to get my auction finishing the following sunday evening. Seems to be more activity around then.

Remember to factor in recorded and insured delivery in your p&p price.

Yes, much more chance of bidding wars in the evening, and both your lenses are popular so if you market them well should sell for good money. But the D70 is probably under £150 now.

As for an alternative there is http://uk.ebid.net/ but don't expect miracles; I've never managed to sell anything on it. But it's cheaper...

Every time I've upgraded a DSLR, I've sold the old one on Gumtree. Never had to wait more than a couple of days and usually got about 90-95% of my asking price. No time wasters, no scammers.

I was selling a lens last month and didnt want to be messed about on Ebay with sellers fees and Paypal fees so I sent an email to http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

They were very helpful and offered me a good price for the lens, I then went on to buy another lens from them 2 weeks later.

My uncle and a friend work for this company http://www.lcegroup.co.uk and I know they buy second hand kit but wouldn't know what they would offer you.

This is a good call. Usual reply to this is that they will take your eyeballs out and you'd be far better selling privately. Howver, MPB have often offered me prices within 10% or so of what I would have advertised privately at. They also cover postage costs and arrange collection. It's a pretty good option.

You admit that they provide the best service you require (as in sell the quickest for the best price) yet you moan that they don't match the much worse service providers?? It's a free market and Ebay is a business, not a charity. You DON'T HAVE TO use ebay if you don't like their fees.

Also - "messed about on sellers and paypal fees"... How is it "messing about" if all the fees are clearly described on both websites? You're either ok with them and go ahead or take your business elsewhere.

Yes, I forgot to add the arranged the courier and paid the money by bank transfer, very easy and no fuss.

Just got rid of my Canon 500d on gumtree. It had a damaged hot shoe and no matter how honest I am about it on an ebay ad I knew it would get returned with some stupid complaint from someone who didnt read the advert. So I didn't want the hassle with it. Sold it within a week as it was reasonably priced and in cash too with no fees.

Selling my Tamron lens via ebay though. Actually I just checked and it sold an hour ago, for the price I wanted. So I'm happy with that.

I think you need to be registered for a certain number of months and make a certain number of posts before you can access classified on there. Worth checking though as the criteria seems to change weekly.

I'm not that impressed with it though. Seems to be full of people asking long winded anal questions only to never be heard from again. Quite frustrating to be honest.

I would still say that av forums is the best I've used on balance.

There does seem to be room for dedicated website for this stuff but the trouble with stuff like this is that as soon as classifieds sites become useful they seem to get invaded by scammers. Shame.
