As a 205 GTi owner, the state of peugeot these last 10 years has been really sad. Theres nothing in the current range, i would even test drive yet alone consider buying. The legendary 306 GTI-6 has been dead 11 years now and as these cars get older, there's no modern pug to trade up to. Was the 207 GTi really that bad? Dunno, coz ive only ever seen 2 of them.

The 208 however looks promising and is lighter than the fat boy 207. So do PHers think Peugeot might one day rediscover its mojo and do a decent GTI? Frankly Im fed up with Renaultsport having the monopoly on roaring hot hatches....

the RCZ is meant to be a step in the right direction isnt it?

I have to agree, having also owned a 205 GTI 1.9 in the past I thought it was a great car. I also bought both 106 Rallye mk1 and 306 Rallye from new and loved them, but after the 306 Peugeot went downhill fast!

I'm not sure it's possible, unless there is a serious move away from making cars that weigh as much as a small moon/are as tall as they are long/automatic electric memory dual zone everything.

Always thought a 107 GTI would've be a giggle

rcz is a great looking car far better looking than the TT it is slated against being a cheaper version of. However the rest of the range is appauling and holds no interest for me.

They need to remake the 205GTI, a la Fiat 500, MINI etc.

Only if they get rid of the awful company face grafted onto the front of every car in the range regardless of how it looks and sort out reliability.

I'm a 205 driver too. I went to a Peugeot dealership a few weeks ago, and before i even got out of my a few salesmen were on their way over to the 205 for a chat. I looked around at the forecourt and it was so bland, apart from the rcz which was mildly interesting. Just a bunch of overweight, underpowered, uninspiring pugs.

One of the guys was telling me about when he used to sell 205's/309's/405's and how the old days were much better. I was told Peugeot intend on trying to compete more with the saloon market to rival things like the 3 series. Sad though, because Peugeot should still be able to compete with the likes of Renault in the hot hatch market, they know what makes a hot hatch, i just get the feeling they don't want to.

It all went wrong when they dropped the 505

I get the impression that up to the RCZ, the 306 was the last great car they made?

Now that's a good idea, i would love a up to date version parked alongside my original 1.9

My understanding of Peugeot is that they have always made cheap unreliable cars, but at least they had some character / flair and of course some great sporty models like the 205 gti, etc.

Now they make cheap, unreliable and really boring cars. I can see no advantage to buying a Peugeot over buying something like a Kia these days.

The RCZ is pretty good, the 408 is supposed to be pretty good too. I don't think they will ever match the rose tinted view of the old cars though.

What I thought. Still along way to go mind. Building a decent hot hatch to take it to Renualt would be a good start.

correct.. Although even so they really should have made some slightly 'warmer' versions of the RCZ

since the 306 gti-6 all of their hatches have been too weak and unfocused.

They are producing boring, mildly warm, sloppy unreliable hatches these days

I think they could do very well if they bought out some genuinely focused renaultsport competitors but I'm doubt they have it in them anymore

Speaking of the rcz a work colleague owns and one says it's lovey to look at but wishes in hindsight he'd spent the extra cash on a Renault or hot VAG... as dynamically it doesn't float his boat after doing many miles.

Not worth spending so much on a cheap thrill like a hot vag.

They peaked with the X06 series, from there it was only downhill frown
Probably the stylist/manager who oversaw the X05 and X06 series left, which would explain the crapness of the models after that. Obviously a key individual left between the two and it went to pot.

^ this man speaks the truth. The daft smiley face was OK for the first model, then they all got bigger. It now looks like a retard that's had an alergic reaction to nuts. Not good.

Bring back the 205 / 405 / 407 styling, Pugeot used to make some of the most attractive cars in class, now they just make tat.

I think they have lost it forever.

Last decent one? The 106 GTi about 15 years ago.
