If you could use any shake, what would it be brand wise?

If money didn't come into it.

I've always been on myprotein - mainly due to the price - but don't have to pay now.

Been looking at Sci-MX, looks decent stuff, has anyone tried it?

Then of course there's maximuscle, whilst I know it's plenty of money I don't know how good it is, or how much the branding/marketing sells it.

Or any other thoughts?

Thanks

I'd probably use sci-mx, reflex or TTP if money were no object. With regards to sci-mx I've not yet personally tried it but it was highly recommended by a Spaniard that used to come our gym. He'd take nothing else and he's in great shape.

As I have said before on here, Protein is pretty much the same where ever you get it from whether you pay silly money, or get the cheap stuff like MyProtein. I would bet all my money that you could test the performance gains from the most expensive brand, compared to the cheapest with a control to measure against and there would be no significant difference.

Therefore I would pick whichever one tastes the nicest, and I like myprotein unflavoured mixed with nesquick. Yum.

I go by what's easiest on my stomach and so it's either Gaspari, ON or VPX - none of these brands are particularly cheap but I don't really go through them quickly either.

Post Workout - PHD 2:1 Recovery. Probably the nicest tasting shake you will find.
Whey Protein - PHD Diet Whey. Mixes well and tastes lovely.
Casein Protein - ON Gold Standard. Tastes lovely.

When it comes to value for money and taste I don't think PHD can be beaten.

I take it you haven't tried white chocolate phd diet protein?! The only way I can describe that is feet dipped in white chocolate! Good results from it though.

No I haven't tried that one. I try and stay away from chocolate flavours as it's not very often you get a nice one. The Vanilla and strawberry flavours are lovely though.

I found bulk powders chocolate flavour tastes fantastic. Matrix on the other hand tastes like chocolate fish food. I might try those flavours in the diet whey in the future, good to know they don't all taste bad in that range.

So your suggesting all protein is the same?! I disagree. The likes of MET-RX, USN IGF-1 and Optimum Nutrition Gold standard are far better quality (finer powder/mixes easy/digests well) than the formentioned brands. I agree that any brand will support your growth/repair to a certain extent but then, it's all down to your style of training isn't it to see progress! For instance, If your a Bodybuilder and train with heavy volumes, your going to grow regardless the brand of shake your taking, therefore you are going to think "well this shake is great, I can see results!" On the other hand, if you train with light/moderate weights then, you may not see results so fast and start looking for excuses i.e the shake I am taking is unsufficient, when actually it isn't, it's supporting you but, your not growing hence style of training.

I think protein shakes are often misunderstood by many in what it actually does! Probably becuase the way it's advertised these day's! As the op suggests "is it any good" Well yes, if you know what your doing! I wouldn't recommend taking Protein shakes as a meal replacement either. They are not nutritious in anyway shape or form. Never skip a meal! I'd rather skip a training session than a meal. Lets face it, anything consumed which is man made is bad!

Personally, I'd take egg whites over protein shake's any day of the week. It's purely the fineness quality of protein on the planet.

No. Low quality proteins are much less beneficial to muscle repair and development than high quality proteins. By low quaility I mean soy based proteins for example. All whey protein is high quality protein, and the difference between brands who all claim to have the best will be negligable.

To add to that recent studies have shown that there are disadvantages to just having whey protein post workout and infact, a whole milk protein with both fast and slow release is more benefical.

If you want a Whey mixed with casein then BSN Syntha-6 tastes fantastic and is a combined release.

Excellent stuff and good values.

Whey mixed with casien is just milk protein! Chocolate milk is best as you have sugars too smile

There are only 4 protein manufacturers out there where everyone buys their protein from and rebrands it often with hidden proprietary ingredients for the expensive brands. Essentially proprietary ingredients are about 95% useless since they usually contain insufficient levels of the ingredient to make any difference.

So really it comes down to price and taste if we are comparing the same type of protein.

Whey is fine whatever brand and whey isolate if you like the low carb approach.

Don't be fooled into spending lots on something that is just marketing and bumpf!

I use myprotein, BBW or bulk supplements.

I might go with sci-mx, seem to be getting good reviews on the net. Good variety of products too.

Doesn't matter about price or goals etc, I'm getting them through a sponsorship type thing and I just have to pick a brand and not a specific product - may as well go with the most dear!

Cheers

Does protein put weight on quick?

The reason I ask, I managed to go from 90kgs to 88kgs from Xmas, I then started on MYProtein natural whey and I am now up to 91kgs.

I have been hitting the weights quite hard so I expect some of that weight is muscle but it seems a lot.

I only take one scoop straight after a workout with half a pint of milk.

Protein will add calories to your diet but if you are gaining weight and its not pure lean muscle then an element will be fat and that will come from a combination of diet and protein powder (which adds extra calories to your diet).
