Could anyone please tell me what the steering column cowl is from on a 1981 280i? also what wing mirrors are they as its never had a n/s one and its a pain in the arse not having one. or is it easier to get some after market ones? All comments, ideas and opinions welcome.

The tasmin being my daily drive is going well, even through the snow, a smile on my face everyday, touch wood!

Hi Mate..Mine is from a TR7 and i believe that rimmerbros stock them although mine has the ignition on the L/H/S..
Not sure as regards to wing mirrors as mine had the cheap nasty ones from awfords and has been replaced with the same ones...Heres a pic of my steering column cowling..Well just about anyway..

Rimmerbros:
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID006323
Part No. Top: XKC 591 or 593 Lower:XKC 592 or 594..Cowling screws x 2 AFU 1212
Unfortunately my one is not available anymore..And the RHD ones are second hand.

Hope this helps...Cheers..Ziga

I've thought about some mk1 golf mirrors as you can pick up a new pair from flea bay for £20, just dont know if the door on the n/s has any strength to be able to get a fixing.

As for the steering cowl i'm still none the wiser as mine hasn't got one at all so can't compare, so might have to just make a gamble with that. But i'll see if anyone one else has any ideas, but i'm not knocking your knowledge ziga.

cheers steppers

Yeah, I think they are left hand drive TR7 too, but they are very hard to find (at a decent price).

In case it's any use -

Apparently it's possible to fit the Dolomite column, and looking at the space, it may be other Triumph columns may fit. The Triumph columns for Saloon,Dolo,Stag etc all used a common cowl and the columns don't differ all that much. Late Dolo had an adjustable column...

The later wedges used Ford Sierra I think

'Later' wedges used the SD1 column (rake & tilt adjustable, the main lights switch is on the left of it)... 'much later' wedges (say '88-on, probably introduced even later than that, on the 400SE) used the Mk 3 Granada column and switches.
