Hi there,
I have been a long term reader of the pistonheads gassing forum after I found it through a search engine as I am a car lover and wanted to know more about speed measures the police use. After reading numerous posts over the following months I noticed you have some very intelligent members who make very valid and relevant points with a great contrast of views from many other members which is nice to see.

/Intro off

Basically I live in Warwickshire, Stratford-On-Avon in the midlands, I am curious as to how the camera vans operate in this area. After reading several posts and various other information sites I gather that the vans rely on laser to be able to attain a speed/distance measurement and record this to a video feed and dispatch NIPS to the naughty people who havent been speedo checking.

To keep me on my toes and to constantly remind me to drive sainely I brought a Snooper S6-R neo. It works great albeit the false K band laser warnings off automatic door sensors and traffic lights. But I have noticed the following problem which Im hoping you fine folk can help me out with.

Whenever I drive past one of these brand new state of the art camera vans I get no laser warning what so ever. I have even been so sad to use the warwickshire camera partnership website to see what roads the vans are operating for the day and go and test the snooper out in the laser department. But no joy at all. I have seen these vans on average once a fortnight as they regularly check the A3400 which I use frequently but no joy on a laser alert. I read somewhere that the operator will only laser your car should he/she suspect you of speeding how valid is this. Also has the technology evolved beyond using laser to some sort of motion sensing camera hence the no warning? Or is it that my snooper is a load of rubbish and doesnt understand what laser to be looking for or the Radar /laser sensing block is not in the right location. It is currently sitting on the dash facing forward through the windscreen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Edwards.

The laser detector part of the snooper isnt in the line of sight for the laser id say, thats why you get no alerts.
If you want it testing, have a word with steve at the UK speedtraps website, he does a jammer testing service with the real police LTI and other guns. hth.

ps welcome.

Hi deltaf,

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah thats a good idea, I'll try moving it more central and further down the windscreen closer to the number plate and see what happens next time I pass one.

Thanks for informing me about the testing service that can be done will look into that.

Thanks again

Deltaf seems to be spot on - as well as the fact that the sensor part of the detector may not be in the line of sight of the laser beam, it's also worth noting that the laser isn't constantly "on", it's only "fired" when the operator pulls the trigger on the device.

The beam width is 60cm diameter at 400m.

Let me know if you want it tested, I have a Prolaser speed gun top play with

I'm not exactly local but I'm often at a few motorsport type events and would be happy offer a little test. It's surprising just how many of these things dont work at all.

If your anywhere Silverstone on Saturday I'll have it with me there.
