After much umming and arring I've got it down to three... Due to the hounds it needs to be an estate so I'm thinking RS4 B7, E61 M5 or RS6 C6.

The 4 will be cheaper and tends to have higher milage, the E61 middle and 6 a little more but will have higher milage. The last two being within a few grand but a good E61 is hard to find at the right spec.

Whichever I end up with it'll be mildly tuned and probably Vmaxed at some point.

My question is what would you buy, and barring the E61 as I've read the buyers guide on here, are there any major issues I need to know about before I decide and buy?

How much space do you need as the E61/A6 are considerably larger and more comfortable inside than the A4?

I'd go for the M5 personally (I am biased as already an E61 owner) but can see the appeal of the other 2.

Nice position to be in!

Purely from a practical perspective, the BMW is bigger and can therefore carry more, but the Audi is 4wd. Living where I do, I would have gone for whichever Audi holds its value best or had the more comfortable interior. I'm not a big fan of the Audi brand - had an A3 before and while it was well screwed together I just don't like the majority of the cars or the majority of the people who drive them (standfast our favourite couple who have his n hers A4 diesel estates!). The Merc estate just doesn't do anything for me.

Maybe it's a case of test driving them and just seeing which one suits you most? There's not a vast amount of difference between them.

I've driven all three and have had an E60 M5 before, I'm just stumped. In my head I think I've pretty much ruled the RS4 out due to it being smaller and the new one coming soon. The E62 and RS6 are very different cars but where I live the four wheel drive would make more sense. The RS6 is easily tuneable, reliable, fast, might have higher milage and cost a little more but a good prospect... So why do I end up looking at M5 touring adds all day..?
