Car Stereo System - iPod Jack

Hi,
Not really sure if this goes here, music, gadgets or hi-fi, but feel free to move it to its relevant home mods.
Anyway, I have a Vauxhall Insignia. Yes I know, how very exciting...
I currently have an iPhone which plugs into the car's USB port and everything works lovely. I'm a bit of a technology fan and I'm due an upgrade in April. As Apple seem to be dragging their heels bringing out the iPhone 5, I will probably get a Samsung Galaxy S3. Now will this work in my Insignia in the same ways as my iPhone or will I have to use the 3.5mm jack.
It sounds like a stupid question I know, but the handbook calls it an 'iPod jack' and it says 'checking iPod' when I plug it in. This leads me to believe that maybe it is only geared towards iPods.
Anybody know if you can use a different MP3 player or phone?
Most of my mates have iPods or iPhones, so I haven't managed to borrow something different to check yet...
