Last year I noticed that some direct debits had been added to my current account, they were nothing to do with me and a visit to the branch showed that the bank had signed off the direct debit agreement for someone who had a completely different name to me but was using my account number (how the fk does this even happen?). They reluctantly gave me a new bank account, which then lead to fk up number two:

They were supposed to transfer all of my direct debits from my old account to the new one, as well as my overdraft. They then refused to let me have two overdrafts, even though I explained that I wasn't not applying for two overdrafts, the old one would be cancelled out by the new one and the old account would then be closed. Anyway, I now have two accounts, my new one which has my direct debits on (after having to set some of them up manually because Santander fkwits didn't notify the companies and I missed a loan repayment because of it) and no overdraft, and my old bank account which has an overdraft but no money in.

fk up number three: I am now trying to close the old account, I have settled the balance to £0 and a week ago closed the account in my local branch, as well as handing my card over to be destroyed. Case closed...or not. Today I get a letter threatening some kind of action against me because the old account has no money in it, so I phone them to tell them that the account is, or should be, closed. Now I am told I can't close the account because I have to pay a fixed monthly overdraft fee from two months ago, I will apparently have to wait until March to close it, where they will more than likely tell me I can't close it then because another month of overdraft fees have accumulated.

Short version:

  • Bank accepted direct debits on my bank account under a name other than the account holder.
  • Bank reluctantly provided new account, failed to properly transfer direct debits (sent me a letter claiming they were all sorted, too). Missed a repayment, now shows on my credit report.
  • Closed bank account a week ago, bank destroyed all related bank cards. I get an angry letter today telling me to make a deposit or else.
  • Bank account is magically still open and accumulating charges, wont let me close it until I wait until next month, at which time there will be another monthly charge added. Going round in fking circles.
  • Tying noose as we speak.
P.S. They also wont let me reduce the overdraft on the older account.

Make a formal complaint to the bank head office and if no joy go to the Ombudsman.

People who bank with this clueless lot are just waiting for a cock-up - don't know why people risk it!

I'm hoping to change once they get their fingers out of their arses and close this account for me, not sure who to choose though, Santander own a lot of them now. I've tried Halifax and they were equally terrible.

As above complain and complain BUT when you have done this and are satisfied with the result MOVE BANKS.

I have closed 6, yes 6, accounts with Santander because they have the worst customer service of any bank I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. Utter clowns.
