These threads are fun aren't they(?)

I do 20k miles per year commuting from Cardiff to Bristol (1 hr each way), so mostly motorway miles, and have a 1.6tdci focus which does the job, averaging 51mpg. But after a year of doing this commute, im just bored with the car.I have 3 kids but the wife uses our s-max, so I only need 4 seats.

By my maths, a petrol car that can average 40mpg will see me about £500 a year out of pocket on fuel costs compared to the focus, which isn't too bad and certainly cheaper than running two cars. So what fun petrol car should I get for £7.5-9k? I have considered:

-R56 mini cooper s - fast, good economy. A 56 plate with 50k miles seems to be about £8.5k

-Suzuki swift- slightly less economical than the mini due to only being a 5 speed for the motorway work, less powerful, less fun? but chaper. 09 plate with 15k miles circa £7k

-Renault sport Twingo- cheap but perhaps a little tiresome on the motorway?

What do you reckon? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Not so good on petrol but great car, cheaper to start with and should be reliable. Worth thinking about.

I would argue the mini is in a different class to the Twingo and the Suzuki. All our meant to be good cars, although I have heard the mpg in the swift is not great and the engine is designed to take super unleaded only.

The Fiat 100hp gets compared to the latter two in many road tests and does well against them (also significantly cheaper), but all three may get tiresome on the motorway. Mini is probably the best choice if you can afford the extra purchase price.

I suggest 120bhp cars and you pull out the 230bhp. Stop tempting me!! I really, really have to keep closer to that magic 40mpg.

20K a year of mostly motorway miles and want to downsize to something smaller and less comfortable?

Mini Cooper S = 40MPG?

I think there is a lot of "man logic" and very little common sense going on here, but the best of luck to you.

Mini claim 48 mpg. Reading around owner reviews, people seem to get 40 mpg. I have to say I was suprised, but this is why it makes my list.

Clio 182! (I'm biased)

Does 40mpg, is a hoot to drive and you could pick up a mint low miler for half of your budget. Don't believe the reliability stories either, mine has been perfect.
