Sorry if this is in the wrong place!

I have 205 40 17 tyres on my car and i'm fed up with the bumpy ride and pot hole risk!

My question is can I go from a 205 40 17 to a 205 45 or 50 17 on the same wheel?

Yes, but your speedo will be out.

It needn't have been. Why not go back to 16 inch?

I prefer the bigger wheel but my 40 profile is way too bumpy!

I assume you have put ST wheels on your Fiesta? Be careful that they dont scrub - maybe a more specialist Fiesta forum can tell you?

If you increase profile then drop your rim size back down to 16. Speedo should be more accurate. Or just hook up a sat nav they are pretty accurate at speed measuring.

I don't thimk 45s will make that much difference from 40s, 50s will be more noticeable though. Whether they are any good, or will fit your car, might be a different issue.

I used to have 205/40/17 on my Mk1 Focus. Found the ride too hard so went for 215/45/17 which was a lot better but they didnt look quite as good. Should have got 215/40/17. The car as lowered 30mm on eibachs aswell.

I have a cheap after market set of wheels, there is plenty of room at present. I don't really want to go back to a 16" wheel but I do want a bit more rubber between me and the road (if that makes sense)

Get them changed. They handle better and accelerate faster on the 16s anyway

acceleration due to relatively slightly shorter gear ratio's due to smaller wheel size and tyre profile?

Would there be much difference in handling from 16's to 17's? I wouldn't have thought it would have been much!

I think tyre choice would matter more in that situation

Go here:

http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

Input your original tyre size then select various sizes @ 17 inches until you have one with a more accurate Speedo and a bigger profile.

The profile or aspect ratio is linked to the width of the tyre.

Eg. Standard 195/55/16 >>>>> aftermarket 215/45/17 only .84% different

Also have a look here http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

Use the calculator to check that your preferred tyre width is compatible with the rim size.
