Barn Find 1974 Porsche 911
Discussion
So imagine my surprise when a friend let me know that his late Father's 1974 911 S was pushed into his Mum's garage 13 years ago and has never had the cover lifted off it since. All I know at the minute is that the car is a red 911 S, with a "fin on the back" and that his Father used to show the car. So when it was pushed in there it was allegedly immaculate.
No idea on the mileage, whether it's pre-impact bumper, or even what model it is... but I'll hopefully be having a look at the weekend
Any tips on what to look for to ID the car... these early 911's are not my specialist subject I'm afraid so any help appreciated. Where to locate the VIN I guess would be a good start...?

have a look at the impact bumpers forum
the vin is on an aluminium plate under the front bonnet
also worth looking under the ashtray...chassis number or build number
start hoping its a 74 Carrera! worth £70k restored
Be careful! A 1974 Carrera 2.7 might be worth a bit more than a standard 1974 911 but £70k....hmmm....and it is very very difficult to tell a 7R crankcase from a standard one....and very easy to dress up a car....and in the US they didn't even get the old engine....the vin is on an aluminium plate under the front bonnet

The 2.7 motor in the impact cars (aside from the Carrera) is not the best engine they ever produced and even in "S" guise has a paltry 175bhp. The engine isn't as robust as the later units in the SC either.
Having said all of that, for a bit of period charm, with black vinyl/ red tartan seats and trim...and if you are lucky, the retention of the chrome trim around lights, door tops etc makes for a nice retro car....and if it isn't full of filler and you can buy it for a chunk less than £10k, take a punt....
If you look here, the carrera is c.70k and upwards!

Am I missing something? dont you just look at teh last two digits of the part number stamped on the case (dont confuse it with the heads)if it says 7r then its 7r.
You also need to look at the engine type code next to the fan shroud. If it says 911/83 then its a genuine 2.7mfi.

Thanks for all the pointers guys, I feel like I actually know what I'm looking for now!
If I get chance I'll go and see the car tomorrow, latest will be Sunday so will try and post some details and a couple of pics. Got my hands full tomorrow picking up the my new Pork so it's going to be a good weekend

To make an S look like a Carrera you'll need at least : flared rear arches, a mechanical fuel injection set up, different clocks. Not impossible but hardly the work of a few hours and 5k!
The important number in a Carrera VIN is actually the next 6, like the 73 cars, but as above look for 911/83 stamped on the horizontal surface to the righ of the fan and .7R on the bottom of the cases.
The last good RHD coupe made 80k, LHD ones make more.
It'll be an S, so as above c. 25k for a lully one.
Here you go:

Car is a 2.7 Carrera 1974, first reg'd Feb '74, chassis number beginning 911410XXXX. Lots of history, appears to be original 57k miles, clearly with non-original wheels and rear spoiler. From what I could tell in the somewhat restricted garage (!) the bodywork appeared rust free and the interior very tidy.
So... thoughts on value?

Lot of things about that car don't look right......fairly modern mats for a car that last opened 13 years ago...tyre shine still on the inflated tyres... Something doesn't add up for me
The mats were around in the late 90's and tyre shine is mostly silicon so won't dry out when covered over so those things don't bother me. I agree the car has had, how can I say it, one or two choice accesories such as the speakers, wheels and spoiler, but is there a good car underneath as those things are easy to fix?Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
