996 cab hardtop - roof bars?
Discussion
I have the OEM RTS (Roof Transport System) for my Boxster and it can certainly be fitted to the car with or without the hardtop in place.
e.g.

Not my car btw but more info here.. http://web.me.com/rick3000/BluBoxster/page8/files/...
Although the there appears to be a similar system for the 996 Cab...

...I haven't found any proof that you can use that sysem when the hardtop is in use a la Boxster and would therefore assume that you can't.
The red 996 in the attached link is quite clearly being hacked with non-OEM parts to get around this problem. Not a bad solution you might think but there may be a risk of overloading the hardtop mounting points....

to get my bike to the track (VeloDrome) I have to totally dismantle it - frame just squeezes into the rear boot with my pump, saddle, bits & cranks and then the wheels just fit into the from boot nicely so I still have a front seat free.
Its a 10 min job to build it at the other end!
Roof Rack FFS !!!!

Try the below Boxster specific link and particularly, the B-pillar mounting points. You should see that roof transport mounting points are 'external'. The hard top mounting points are separate and 'within' the passenger comparment if you get my drift.
If you already have a 996 hardtop, perhaps you can see if your rear mounting points are external. If so, that could mean that they are common to the roof transport mounting points and you can't run both at the same time...

If you really want the OEM RTS, then it may be that you would have to forget about the hardtop and just run with the soft top for the duration. It's rather noisy of course but not the end of the world with ear plugs in place!
P.S. another 'issue' of course is that with the RTS fitted to the soft top. The top mechanism cannot be used and you are advised to pull the fuse. You can of course quickly remove the RTS though if you need to get the top down for a bit of alpine sun and then re-fit the RTS for comedy value.
