Im building up to buying a classic to join my collection and was planning to build a wooden garage at the end of the garages.

Its occured to me though that with some minor alterations to the garage roof rafters I could put a lift in (2 eventually) and fit 4 and then 5 cars in the existing garage.

It looks fairly simple to me, I wouldnt need to change it all, just an area where the car roofs would go, but I have no idea tbh.

Its currently this kind of arrangement /\/\/\ (well sort of).

Can anyone recommend a builder who could come and give me a quote for changing the layout please? Im between Leeds and York.

It sounds like a truss and I'd recommend you find a friendly structural engineer before speaking to a builder.

On the face of it, I'd suggest you extend, rather than go up. You probably don't know how hard/deep the garage floor is for the lift, the truss is there for a reason and is a sound & suitable structure for the size of roof/building, so entending the length is probably quickest/safest way forward.

Thanks. I'll never get planning to extend but may stick with the wooden garage plan.

If I move stuff around I may well be able to fit the Indy R sideways in front of the JCW and put the classic on the trailer. Gonna have a move around tomorrow.

I know a friendly structural engineer Richard if you need one. I can also offer some advice or take a look at what you want to do if that would help.

Why wouldn't you get planning to extend, have you tried before or is there some issue preventing it being done.

PM me you're phone number if you want a chat.

Hi Leigh, that would be great, I'll pm you my number. Planning is a nightmare round here what with village envelopes etc but more of an issue is wife permission, I can't be bothered with the debate. Much easier to either:

1. Replace the current shed with an err, bigger shed that might actually, somehow resemble a wooden garage.
2. Remove some of the 'furniture' from the garage, put the Indy sideways in front of the JCW and get 4 cars in the garage that way
3. See if the cross beams can be altered where a 2 post lift could go to allow a car to fit above the M3 in the last garage.

3 is the best option for me. Least whining from Mrs Leg (no visible change to the house), a lift is handy anyway (wheel cleaning etc) and all the cars are in one garage (appeals to my car OCD).

Just depends if the floor will support it and if some of the cross beams can be altered. They are about 12 inches apart I think and go front to back along the whole garage. There must be 30-40 of them and I would need to alter say, 6-8 of them and only in the centre where the car roof/roll cage would go. I would put the Indy on the lift as it comes out least, is smallest and lightest. That frees the space on the trailer up in garage one and the classic (likely a 993 convertible but possibly a proper 1930s classic type thing) could sit on the trailer. Mini is in the middle.

Another benefit to this is if it can be done once I can do it n the centre garage too meaning I can get another car in there in the future. Further feeding my addiction!

Of course the obvious solution, as suggested by wifey, is to simply leave the works mini outside but that just feels wrong, poor thing is used to being cosy. :-)
