For £800 would you go for

1, P reg, Mondeo 2.0 petrol estate, priced at £799

or

2, N reg, peugeot 405 1.9 diesel estate, priced at £595

Both have full mot, and are at the same dealer.

The one that was the best example, buy on condition not the type of car at this price bracket.

I would go for the peugeot at that price 12 months ticket, and cheaper.

I'd be wondering why you're buying from a dealer ?????

At that price they are both going to be equally 'sheddy' and you will get f*** all comeback from the dealer if there are any issues down the line..

I'd be looking at private cars, NOT diesel, advertised on ebay and autotrader.

Plenty out there, just takes a little effort..

Oh, and a P reg petrol Mondeo estate, should be nearer £500 max..

For ~£1000 there are any number of volvo v70 and v40 estates for the taking, all better than those 2 suggestions.

I wouldn't pay £800 for the pug.

i wouldn't pay £8 for a Pug, truly awful cars

for £800, go on condition and a good comprehensive service history

although for £800 it could well give my garden shed a run for it's money

I'd offer £700 for the Mondeo.

The Peugeot will be fine mechanically, but the interior will fall apart around you.

Agree with above.

For £500-800 Ebay or local paper is the place to go. Sometimes find some absolute bargains.

eg. Primera for £650 max.

Thanks for the advice so far, i'm open to other suggestions, but it has to be an estate so that the wifes mobility scooter will fit in easily

That limits the choice somewhat but I still think you can still get yourself a better car.

eg. V40

You will be able to get a 406 estate for that money which is a much nicer car than the 405. I wouldn't get either though.

Nissan primers estate? Honda accord estate?

Seconded!!

But if you are going for one of the two I would go for the pug. I had an indestructible one once. A lot more frugal than a ford 2l petrol too....

I'd pick the Pug, but I am biased- my first car was a 405GLX 1.9TD estate, I thought it was great for what it was- cheap, economical, comfortable, not bad looking for an old boxy estate and loads of room in the back. Gear change is notchy and clutch heavy in these though, and the 1.9 is sloooow 'till the turbo kicks in. I had it for about 20k trouble-free miles, sold it on @ 195k.
