Well Peeps! The Hols are not far away now. Time to visit our Continental Cousins again for a few weeks.

This lead me to think though!!

Are we becoming a Nation of Speedophiles! Are we guilty of tourist Speedopilia? Crossing the Channel at the dead of night to pay "Johny Foriegner" to become party to our immoral/perverted desires! The "Craving" taking hold at LEAST once a year for our FIX!

On crossing the Channel we are instantly rewarded with an 81 mph limit (130 kph). Allowing us to get our cars into "top gear" for the very first time ever, we are pleasently surprised to find that the air in our lungs is NOT sucked from our very bodies by the increased velocity!

Neither does the car create a sonic boom, to cause the cows in France to cease giving milk or the chickens in Belgium to stop laying!

I also have found that the increased speed does not cause the car to "fall to pieces" by virtue of vibration, and that mileage/gallon is actually increased by driving faster, in a higher gear!!! And more miles /Gallon makes me happy.

On Entering Germany there "Should be" a sign saying: "Welcomen in Utopia", Speed Limit! "Was ist Das?"

I once exceeded 100 mph on a German Autobahn! Yes! It's true!!!.....Honest!!

Ah! but! The day after I took the caravan off (you think I'm joking don't you!) and accelerated smoothly to 150 mph on a clear unlimited autobahn, Ah! Memories. And do you know what? I didn't feel guilty at all, even when two nice German Policemen flashed me from behind when doing 120 mph. Then passed me by, in a VERY fetching open topped green & white Porsche Carerra, and I got a curteous wave as he went by at around 160 mph! Ah! Motoring Nirvana! I think I've found it.

I confess now! I am a Speedopile!...[applause] It has been 2 days since my last: "transgression."..... [applause]

Oh but! Have you heard the latest on German TV? The Socialist SPD, and the........Greens want to introduce a SPEED LIMIT on GERMAN AUTO-BAHNS!!!!!! anything to do with ever expensive oil imports, do you think?

Whatever Next!! Autobahn Speed camera's??? ..... You can read them like a book can't you!

Reminds me of a mate who was low on petrol so drove as fast as he could to get to the garage before he ran out

Funny thing is I got a 1 month driving ban in germany... Whoops! ( Hidden scamera on an open 3 lane road out of town 50 km/ph limit )

This taught me 2 things about driving in Germany

1) Never ever speed where there is a limit

2) Go as fast as possible on the unrestricted parts of the autobahn

Totally agree with the first one, although when next in Germany on the Eurohoon tour, I will only drive at 70mph on the autobahn because I don't have the special skills needed to drive faster, apparently only trained policemen have them.

It seems the entire German population would disagree with this.

Their driving test is much more comprehensive than the UK one and includes autobahn driving.

You don't even get on the motorway while taking lessons in the UK, no wonder there are so many shit drivers!

There's a good reason for that:
highway code said:
Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional car or motorcycle driving licences unless exempt, riders of motorcycles under 50cc, cyclists and horse riders. Certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission), agricultural vehicles and most invalid carriages are also prohibited.
i.e. it's illegal, although I'm not too sure what makes one "exempt".

Having it printed in the rules is not a good reason to not let lerners on the motorway!

Its crazy how unprepared new drovers really are.

I think most people would agree that motorway driving is a different style than non-motorway in some respects.

I think it would be all round advantageous for the UK test to include some (even if primitive) form of motorway test.

I'd say that having a rule banning them from the motorway is a good reason not to let them on. Apart from that I agree with you. Just because there is a law doesn't mean that it's right (c.f. "speed limits").

I am not saying that speed limits should be totally abolished. I just don't agree with some of them.

It's a sad fact though....Only policemen are trained in this country to drive at high speeds etc, and then are continually assessed and if they fall below a certain standard, they can no longer drive powerful police cars ....the rest of the populous takes a basic test at 17 and then has over 50 years motoring to go without the hint of further training, re-testing or ongoing evaluation.

Yes indeed, I accept that. Only police drivers (and one or two other special groups?) are formally trained in high performance driving.

Is it your view though that without formal advanced driver training it is not possible for anyone else to reach a standard suitable for reasonably fast driving?

As you may gather from various posts of mine, I am not convinced that the lack of formal training should necessarily exclude everyone else from high speed driving within reason.

I imagine many PH members will indulge in high speed driving at times, and probably not many of them will have undergone formal advanced training, and I would not presume to criticise them for that.

In my own case I have maintained a keen interest in driving since passing my test in 1957, but I have never had any formal advanced tuition. Having said that, I have made every effort to acquire what I like to think may qualify as fairly advanced techniques on a self taught basis. This is not ideal of course but surely it does not leave me right at the beginning of the learning process.

By the way Gary, are you located anywhere near North Yorkshire?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

That`ll be why us truckies are so good then - we can practise on the motorways before we are let loose on the unsuspecting public
