How old are the plugs / leads / plug caps? Possibly 1 or more breaking down. Coil? Ignition ampl.?
I'd start looking at the basics first.

Good luck

Could be the ignition amp or coil breaking down the heat gets to them

Not sure which model you have. On the 500 the ignition amp is mounted on a bracket next to the. Coil I think on earlier cars it is on the side of the dizzy

worthwhile taking a VERY close look at the wiring around the ignition module. This can chaffe on the metalwork in the most difficult to see areas resulting in shorting to earth.

In that case I would be checking those first as it's the last thing that was changed.

Start engine in garage in the dark. When hot, rev with throttle linkage and look under bonnet for shorting out sparks. If plugs have been changed recently make sure the leads are a tight fit on plugs. Check HT cable is clean and tight and not shorting on anything . Isolate ig module with rubber flap from proximity of the leads. If any shorts get new leads.
Warning. Keep hands away from hot parts and moving belts in dark.

Hi Si, worth checking the plugs and if the leads have not been changed in recent years change those as a matter of course. You say 'green of Colchester'! I live just outside Colchester in one of the surrounding villages, if you get into bother and cannot change plugs or leads confidently give me bell (send a PM and I will forward contact details), I have an electrical engineering background and might be able to help. All the best, Pete
