Does anyone (probably most likely BiB) here know a civ. talivan operator personally?

Do they fit the expected profile of tosser who has nothing better to do but complain and moan about pointless things but now actually have the power to use their irritation against people, or are they just people who are trying (misguidely IMO) to earn a living?

Great guys..just making a living, like traffic wardens, inland revenue workers etc etc..

Just remember the man in the van can look at your car and see it's over the limit and decide..'Well it's not too far over and it's quite quiet on here now' and not record it..

The Gatso wont think like that and will do you everytime..(provided there's film in it..)

Tell that to the van that oiked me for 77 in a 70 on a dead straight D/C in wales at 7:30am with 0 cars around. Only reason I didnt acknowledge the van is because I had never seen one before and there were virutally no markings....

See your point though, I am sure outside of wales its true

That won't work in court

They are supposed to form an opinion on excessive speed and then use the gun to verify. Wonder whether they actually do that ?

Of course not. They just point it at every car.

A good friend of mine does just that sort of job.
He's actually keeping his head down now up to retirement (or redundancy). 4 years ago he told me that if a person just ignored the NIP that it would probably just go away. If a person kept writing in contesting issues, they SCP (as is called now, not then) would get fed up and the case would just dissapear - too much bother for them. Now however they have a computerised system that automatically flags up an NIP that has been ignored, so they get EVERYBODY. Recently the decision was made to drop the trigger speeds of the Gatsos covered by the SCP. (don't know the figures) They were ABSOLUTELY INNUNDATED with very angry drivers. He has said that the job has changed beyond recognition and they are catching the wrong people. He no longer agress with the policies that have put in place.
To give you an idea of what the SCP used to be like (and see if anyone thinks that this is unreasonable) here is an example.
there is a Gatso located on the exit of a tunnel encorporating a sweeping bend speed limit 40MPH. It is, or was set to trigger at 60MPH. That would mean that you would have to have an indicated speed of 60 - 65 MPH on your speedo to get caught. It always had film in it, and used to catch a small handfull of speeders each day. It's now set at 44MPH.
Safety V revenue?
you decide!

I met one at a car show, he gave me a sticker and pen

At least 90% of people came up with a "you caught me" type argument. I used a different tact. As a member here, armed with stats and facts, after a reasoned discussion he even agreed with me on a number of points (KSIstats, regression to the mean etc)

The rest of his team reminded me of the type of people who would be power crazy committee members of a working mans' club...
