Good afternoon.

I am currently 'researching' the option of a galvanised chassis for my Defender, but I am getting conflicting advise on how to paint it, or whether to bother to paint it.

It would appear that you need to degrease then 'T-wash', then rinse off with water before priming. I don't really have anywhere to put a chassis apart from the garage so can't really hose it down - and wouldn't want to keep moving it about anyway to do this.

Therefore I have 3 options:

1 - Simply rub it down with a Scotchbrite pad, paint with galvo primer (Hammerite Special Metals primer?), then chassis black. Will this eventually lift off leaving a water trap?

2 - Leave it as it is - but possibly paint the rear cross member to tone it down a bit

3 - Just coat with Waxoyl?

I don't want to spend £1300 on a chassis then 'do the wrong thing'.

Any advice would be most gratefully received smile

FWIW - I would just waxoyl it black.

I'm starting to think that. If I was to paint it badly and it not adhere, the trapped moisture could be worse than no paint at all!

I've just painted my 6x6 chassis I had galved, you have to use acid etch primer, which is a 2 part primer the stuff they use on aircraft, its got some nasty ste in it so you will need an air fed mask of use a NBC mask if you know anyone in the forces. Its amazing the few bits I missed the smooth hammerite I used just comes straight off. Most industrial paint suppliers should stock it.

You must ALWAYS T Wash a galv chassis.

T Wash is a mordent solution which kills the galv and allows a key for subsequent coatings.

It is then best to acid etch the chassis before top coating.

This will give you a bullet proof finish.
