As the title says im contemplating ridding myself of the MR2, the clutch went in a big way and instead of replacing the clutch/gearbox/million and one bits that it will need and paying around 1000 im tempted to just go all out on a 5k car and move up the ladder.

It's got to be nippy or pretty, i don't mind a mixture.
It's got to be interesting or rare, i do not want a boring rep mobile with a bit of poke.
One or the other is fine, im ok with a kit car with some tuned pinto or what have you or a 1300cc 60's convertible.
Ease to work on would be nice too.

I'm not fussed about insurance, MPG or any of that as it will be a weekend car and if it costs to much to run it wont be ran so much.

Edit - For 5k i can have all the niggles on the mr2 sorted and a lovely v6 put in. However i would like to try front engined RWD and have something different to look out of, but its just an idea that is in my head.

I used to own one ,they are pretty quick ,can be made to handle quite well and you will rarely see another.
Engine/gearbox is Rover back axle is jag and some old granada/austin princess stuff,so mechanicals pretty simple.

Love the tvr ideas. I would love a more modern car, the m3 and the nissan are great ideas. However I'd like to put more emphasis on a car i can work on. My mechanical knowledge is good enough for classics, but as we start getting into the mid 80's im lost most of the time haha.

Interesting, rare, looks (IMO anyway), quick, front-engined/RWD, scant regard for insurance or MPG...this one has got it all covered!

Something American. I just bought a Camaro for that money and it really puts a smile on my face when I drive it. Had a few strangers say 'nice car'. No-one has ever said that about my Elise or other nice cars I've had in the past. There is a nice vette for sale on car and classic for about 5k

I'd agree with this..... For me i'd go for a really well maintained 3.0

is that because of the less chance of vanos issues with the 3 litres?

Not really, i just think that for 5k one would have a better condition/mileage 3.0 than the 3.2 Evo. Also i like the Amber indicators and the Avus blue that the 3.0 can be found in, and lets face it, the 3.0litres are still genuine M-Powered 300BHP (nearly) cars and in my mind are not inferior to the Evo's.
