Going to Afghanistan in Apr and been invited to mates, who is also in Army, baby christening. Thought i would go up (Newcastle) and treat other half in a Porsche. So looking over the net i really need unlimited mileage which rules out the specialist hire firms and means going to main stream type such as Avis and Europcar.
Europcar do unlimited so as im Aldershot i need a Europcar location that is close.
There are 4 "Prestige" outlets, Croydon, Park Royal, Heathrow and Bayswater. Entering all the details, 3 days hire etc the difference between the 4 outlets is a much as £100! Heathrow being the most expensive. Is it because they think people getting off the plane will pay the price because there is no where else to go? It was only by chance i selected the other locations and found out its cheaper.
I actually wanted to hire a Cayman but main stream firms dont seem to do them.

Airports are always dearer due to increased costs for the hire companies.
I met a 24year old serviceman (still a correct term?) recently who buys a new Boxster every year because there's a deal where he gets it VAT free, so his motoring costs net to nil (besides fuel & insurance). I'd suggest seeing what your local OPC will do for you and then try to get them to lend you one for the weekend.....to help you decide

.Yes serviceman is the correct term.
The VAT thing still goes on but not in the way it used to. The Germans, well in fact the EU got wise to it and put strict limitations and "go through hoops" to do it. Yes you can get Tax free cars but the incentives are not as good. BMW actually do the best deals for servicemen now.
You used to go to Germany and see what the "in-car" was. When i was last out in Germany (91 or so) every one had tax-free Honda Civics. Then as years went on and cars got better, SLK's were the in thing for a bit, there was one outside every married soldiers quarter. Nowadays people go for the BMW's and Audis. At one stage when the X5 first came out, because you were able to pick it up quicker than the UK customers (and they were still full UK spec)you could get it tax free, keep it for 6 months then the UK dealer would buy it off you, you make a profit and then they would sell it on. Like i said its not the same now.
As for the Porsche dealer option, i dont think they would be happy me putting on 600 odd miles in 3 days!!

OP, if your after a Porsche then I can recommend a chap called Chris at Carcierge based in reading. He has an immaculate 996 C4s which I had last weekend for my 30th. Sound chap and very nice to deal with. The car is very tidy as well. Google it and he will come up. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

Jim,
I have looked at Carcierge before. In my quest to find my next car when i return from Afghan i was going to go for a C4S and was going to hire one from him before hand but now im settling for a Cayman.
Besides, my journey will be 600 odd miles and it would prove too expensive, hence the mainstream hire firms.
