Porsche or Merc, Petrol Or Diesel?
Discussion
Hi guys, I've been a long time lurker. I'm looking to get either a Mercedes Benz SLK (new model) or the Porsche Cayman.
I think I'm going to go with the Merc, but there are two models
250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 2dr (diesel)
or
200 BlueEFFICIENCY AMG Sport 2dr (petrol)
Just wondering what the differences are between them like the sound of the engine (better or worse on diesel), whether or not I'm going to be filling up often with petrol etc
So the pro's and con's with diesel and petrol.
Thanks guys

Yeah price difference. I'd rather save 10k on something else.
So why the title on this thread? Shouldn't it just be which Merc SLK, petrol or Diesel? I'd assume from your reasoning for discounting the Porsche that value for money is key rather than driver enjoyment, so I'd suggest the Diesel would be your best bet.
I found the basic Cayman to be the most balanced package of power and chassis ability that I've ever driven. Absolutely loved it. I'm struggling to see how a Diesel SLK would come close if funds allowed to choose between the two...

Anyway, which is better for me on the SLK diesel or petrol?
I can't believe that Merc put the C250 cdi diesel in the SLK.
Its more than likely the same engine as in my C-Class, why not save another 10k & get a C-Class with a panoramic sunroof if cost is the issue (if it wasn't you'd buy the Porsche!)
An SLK is 'supposed' to be a sports car, there is nothing sporty about that 4-cylinder diesel engine, if I owned it I'd keep the top up so I didn't have to listen to it!

I'd get the SLK 200 instead of the diesel 250, because as someone has mentioned, if your going to get a sports cars, why do you want it to be powered by a 4 pot diesel? The previous generation SLK 200 had solid residuals as well, so it may be a safer bet for the new model to stick with the 200.
