>>>I meant XKR! Sorry!<<<

Responses maybe a little bias in this section of the PH forum, but I need to start somewhere!

I'm beginning to miss the four seats of my 996tt for weekends away with the family, resorting to using Julies 330d M-Sport for overnights/visiting family.

As nice as Julies car is, it was always more of an occasion going away in 'Dads Car'.

I absolutely love my car. Every thing about it, but would be able to indulge more often if everyone could come along. Quite difficult when the rear seat is replaced with a roll cage?

After having a GT3, I'm not so sure I could handle having a Carrera, on the basis that it would always make me wish I'd kept the GT3. The Turbo, awesome as they are, are just to bloody quiet.

SO, I'm looking for a Performance coupe (or saloon?) that all the family ( Mrs & Mr Bee and a 3 & 7 year old) can fit it and still excite. After looking on AT I found an XKR-S with 550bhp. Nice, although never seen my self as a Jag man.

By pure luck, the local Jag Dealer had an arrive and drive day on and I got a run in one (Just the 5.0 SC XKR). Wow! What a car!.

Question; Has anyone owned one and do think I'm mental to do the change. I'm not a track man. Luck if I do 3 or four track evenings a year. I mostly enjoy driving the North of Scotland visiting nice hotels, something that recently I can only do with friends or the odd weekend with Mrs Bee when we have no children. With the big Jag, it would happen much more often.

Thoughts?

A friend had a XF & the rear passenger ride wasnt the best. The one big thing you will notice sadly is the depreciation of a petrol engined XF though if you can afford a GT3 in the first place I guess it is less of an issue? Your plight isnt unusual but good luck smile

Hi!

Sorry, I meant XKR! Yes, I'm a motor dealer and looked early XKRs up in the Guide - 4400/month drop!!!

The dealership I was in today offered me a 61 plate with 100miles on for 75k with a list of 90!

My budget is 40 - 45.

Just been trawling the Jaguar XKR classifieds and there are some almost new examples out there for £40,000-£50,000.00. Poor people that bought them new

DB9? Maserati GranTurismo? 997 Turbo with an aftermarket exhaust (I agree that the 6/7 turbo engine notes are not the best. Mine reminds me of a huge vacuum cleaner).

Or M5/S8/AMG something?

Or isn't there a way of fitting rear seats in a GT3? Have to shop around for insurance though, IIRC.

Have you tried the kids in the back of a XKR? IIRC its not spacious for child seats.

Take a look at a 40k RS6 - loads of room for the family and 572 horses to make you chuckle.

I've had an XKR. It's a fabulous car but very much a GT rather than sports car but after saying that you can hustle it along it does handle well, the engine is really strong, loads of torque, great car.

Stories of depreciation are greatly exaggerated, there are some strong deals on new and nearly new cars, you need to bear the new discounted price in comparison to the used price when calculating the likely depreciation.

Wow! As I said, the GG shows them dropping 4400/month! The salesman at Jag offered a 100mile example for 75k. It had a list of 90k!!

An early 2010 5.0 car would be ok. Still, there is alot of choice out there for 50k!

Maz, to delicate - ridiculous repair costs, although uber cool smile
997 - too sterile, for me the exhaust doesn't help, makes them sound like a hoover as you say.
M5- looks like a 530d with four exhausts, although sounds like a Lambo - with 4drs!
S8- Boaring
AMG- Not for me, unless a Black Edition!

No child seats needed the youngest will be fine in the rear seats. We have sold a V10 RS6 and as fast as it was, didn't feel anything like as wicked as the XKR 5.0 I drove today. And no where as nice to look at.

I moved from 997 to XKR. Distant memory now that I have two kids, but both cars were fantastic in very different ways. One aspect of the XKR you may not consider is the rarity vs the 997. I seemed to get loads of complements and questions about the Jag, but never when I had the Porsche. One other thing, when I talk about getting another sports car, my wife actively encourages me to get another Jag, but not the Porsche. Not sure I 100% agree, but the Jag is definitely the cruiser to the more sports orientated Porsche.

Oh and my Porsche was a C2S and the Jag was the 4.2 XKR, so both relatively humble vs what you're in and are considering, but I imagine similar on a relative basis.

I saw the new XKR the other day with the new headlights - this was one aspect of the XKR I never liked and I really feel they've nailed it with the redesign.

I love the big hearted jag but it just has too many flaws for me, lack of traction being the biggest one.

I'm guessing an M3 isn't going to tick your boxes if you don't like the M5 but they do look very purposeful what with the carbon roof, sound fantastic too.

How about an M6? Or a previous model M3csl?

I've never driven one but a Maserati may fit the bill smile

(or as daft as it may sound, a 911turbo with an aftermarket exhaust?!)

I would wait for the new model to come out if you want a Jag. I mean the CX-16. That thing is so beautiful that my dad said he will switch his E-type for it. I think the current modelr, especially the XKR-S is not very good looking. Also Jag is heavy car and feel and performance of the thing very much different than GT3. If you want new car just now, maybe you should test at least new 991 C2 or M3 competition package before you make your choice.

Didn't think you would be getting shot of the GT3 so soon Steviebee, but understand your reasoning.

Unfortunately not in a position to be able to buy this car from you though !

Best of luck in your search for a replacement. I can only think along the lines of the Audi RS range TBH. But must admit I have a soft spot for the Jags these days.

Ok. CX-16 will start around $50k. I think M3 competition package is the best compromise between speed and practicality. Ok, it is not actually supercar looking but it is still good and very fast. For those that do not know, competition package adds wider tires (the same that are in GT3?), lower suspension, and an improved traction control modes.

Steviebee,

I have a 997.1 (without roll cage) and stuck some seatbelts in the back and use a couple of graco kids seats for my two who are 6 and 8, insured as a familly 4 seater with Manning UK. However, reading between the lines it sounds like you perhaps are also just looking for a change and have done the GT3 thing? Other interesting (rather than uber saloon) 2+2's to consider could be An Aston Vanquish or DB9 2+2, Evora S, Ferrari 456 or Maserati GranTourismo.

Guys,

thanks for all the input.

WillMc , good to hear from you! Thats been almost a year and 8,000miles - I usually only keep my cars for 18months - the turbo was one of the longest!

My problem is, I get really attached to my cars (sad I know!) and always have to convince myself I'm doing the right thing.

I'm probably going to run the GT3 until late summer to get some more use out of it (Just renewed the warranty and tyres). As I said, I love the bloody thing to bits, but feel I'm being a little selfish with two little ones. MrsBee has only been in it a handful of times, which isn't really fare.

A car I've never driven, is a new model M3. I've had a CS & CSL, the later being one of my favorite cars ever, but think the big Jag has it completely licked in the looks department. Maybe its just my age! lol

The spicey Italian stuff, as much as they are stunning to look at, wouldn't be for me. I'd always feel like its about to break!

EdJ - Thanks for your input. Even the brochures I brought home made MrsBee start to ask questions about it. She has paid more interest to the Jag than the GT3 and I dont even own one yet. Definitely, the facelift car is a real handsome brute.

Criag - Never really got on with the looks of the 6-Series. We have sold a few, and its a great drive, but not the prettiest looking thing on the road.

Graham - I've thought of doing this, but how are the kids with the ride/noise in the back? Or is it just for short journeys? I'm pretty sure the GT3 cage is bolted in rather than the RS which is welded in I believe, can anyone confirm? Thanks for the suggestions, the spicy Italian stuff scares the life out of me. I've been using a V8V this weekend and I'm not convinced with the build quality to be honest, it certainly feels like the Best of British! I fear the Vanquish maybe similar?

Stevie

no one mentionned the Maserati Gran Turismo - but it seats 4 comfortably, much more than the XKR.

And what a grunt - fast GT too.
