I snore really badly frown I mean really really badly. To the point of the OH not staying at my house overnight because of it, and waking up last year when camping and finding the majority of the campsite gathered in the vicinity wondering what the feck the noise was......

I have been to a sleep clinic and been diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea. They connected me up to all sorts of monitors and video cameras and found that I breath hold or stop breathing on average above 16 times per hour when sleeping frown This can of course be fatal.

I have a pending referral to an ENT specialist for surgery on the soft palette at the back of my throat and ho

Continued due to iPhone f**kwittery.

........hopefully this referral will prove be beneficial.

In the interim I am considering one of those mouth guard type efforts to bring my lower jaw forward slightly during sleep and open my airway slightly.

I have also been offered accupuncture for free which can apparently yield results.

The question I have is ; Has anyone used any snoring aid type efforts to reduce noise etc? and if anyone has any tips to help, I would be very grateful.

Thanks all in advance.

This may be off target, in which case I apologise..

but I'm guessing you have a BMI over 30. (KG/Height in M squared)

losing weight almost always reduces or cures snoring

I thought you'd gone! Just kidding, I snore badly too (according to the wife), so watching this thread for helpful suggestions.

When I was 25 I was sufferign from sleep apnea and had a BMI of about 30 (6'4" and 18 stone). I was instructed by an obese doctor to lose weight I got down to a BMI of 25 (15 stone) and my snoring was no better!

Turns out I had a deviated septum that the lazy fat cow of a doc didn't diganose ( because she never even looked up my nose). A quick op cured me completely.

Have to agree with that. My snoring was non existent a few years ago. I put on a few stone after an injury prevented me training, and I can wake half the street snoring now.

Hoping the reverse will happen when I lose weight.

I just tell the OH that it is not snoring, but Love Grunts.

Sign of affection you see. wink
If I tried that with my OH I would suddenly snore no more. Permanently.

In my case snoring is related to weight.

When I was 25++ stone I could wake up the dead.

I lost weight over ten years thus:

When I an under 15 stone I snore considerably less and

If I am under 14 stone I do not snore. At all.

I fluctuate between 14 and 15 stone. Much better.

I am also still alive. More or less.

I'm with the OP. In my case being relegated to the spare room does nothing to cheer the situation either. I've not found the nose strips useful at all and am focussing on weight loss to help, but with OP, I'd see what the boffins say.

You could also try sleeping in different positions - face down has helped me (pillow running from right shoulder to left hip) as have soft earplugs for the missus, which are useful for that inevitable point when you go to a hotel/camping etc and it's inescapable.

Best of luck.

It did appear from my first post that I actually fell asleep half way through, but no, just apple technology.

WRT the BMI, that's a totally understandable question, and one I was expecting. I'm five foot ten and 13 stone. Think that equates to a BMI of around 26? I am technically a little overweight, but not massively so.

Sleeping on one side doesn't seem to make any difference, and I think the sleeping face down part is going to be permanently enforced by the OH if I don't get it sorted out soon.

Initially it was kind of amusing, but now it impacts on weekends away with friends, holidays ( my OH has to prescribe herself non benzo type sleeping tablets) and particularly in lack of ability to spend the night together..... It has lost the initial hilarity frown

Thanks for your replies all.

If it is of use, I will attempt various devices, and field test them for others on here, although I'm aware that can be different results for different people...

Best wishes

Have you tried the sprays? They don't stop snoring, but mute it a little bit. I'd be sceptical about an off the shelf fix but if you can do things to make it a bit more bearable for everyone it's probably a good start

My OH snores like a freight train, and must have tried everything under the sun. Nose strips don't stick and the sprays give him horrible heartburn. He's only a little overweight but has broken his nose four times (I think) so doesn't breathe all that well through it.

The best thing we've found are acupressure rings. They're available from boots and you put them on your little finger in a certain way about an hour before you go to sleep. Those combined with sleeping on his right side or on his front have just about stopped the snoring, or at least quietened it enough for me to sleep through, helping me avoid the urge to smother him while he sleeps... smile

It still makes me laugh when he snores loud enough to wake himself up, then rolls over and says "pardon?" laugh

As mentioned earlier, I will update people on various remedies as I go along and let you know the results smile

I have today purchased one "snorewizard". This appeared to be the least snake oil esque following research, and to have the most provenance......

Mine for the princely sum of £44, so not particularly cheap. It should arrive in a couple of days apparently.

Wish me (and the long suffering o/h) luck smile

University of Exeter study on singing exercises to reduce snoring has has an apparently demonstrable improvement effect.

The (amateur!) website to get the CDs from. 42 quid but worth a go if other stuff is not working I think. I will see if I can get the OH to do it. May not have an excuse to kick him again! wink
