I am looking for a protein shake alternative.

Basically I have had minor kidney issues over the last couple of years which had all cleared up. Then 2 weeks ago I started taking protein shakes again. The pain and problems have slowly begun again. I am very confident it is the shakes as nothing else has changed in my water / food intake.

Im looking for an alternative that I can take at least twice a day between meals. Obviously fish, meat, eggs, but am looking for something not too expensive and not loaded with salt / fat like most of the cheaper range of foods. Also I believe only a few eggs a week was a recomended maximum.

Thanks in advance!

Chocolate milk. Carbs and protein, great for recovery.

P.S. "A couple of eggs a week" is a very outdated view.

Quark. Cheap but doesnt taste that nice so needs to be incorporated with other food. You can buy it in Tescos. Comes in margarine sized tubs.

Not sure I've helped there. smile

I tried to eat it plain once, grim. Might be okay blended with a pint of chocolate milk?

Because I'm stupid - misread/misinterpreted the OP. Read it as an alternative shake...

Sorry mate, no use at all. getmecoat

I'd not worry too much about eggs though - an excellent source of healthy fats and quality protein. Boiled eggs are also a very quick and convenient snack to keep in your tuck box.

Cheers all for the answers so far!

Will give this Quark a go, and well glad eggs arent so bad - one of my fave foods!

There are different ypes of protein shakes. I'm assuming you've tried Whey? How about milk or egg protein, or some kind of Whey isolate. There's sample packs avalible from My Protein.

Is the problem the shake, or actually digesting the protein?

Yes its whey powder from various companies that i have used.
Forgot you could get milk and egg protein powders, no harm in testing em.

Digestion is fine, it is the kidney side of things - dont know what it is, but have heard shakes etc arent good for long term kidney problems.

No worse than a the same amount of protein from a normal diet. You'd need a crazy high amount of protein to cause kidney issues.

I thought high protein put a little strain on the liver. Not heard kidneys mentioned before?

Sainsburys Basic Tuna is a pretty cheap alternative. Not as cheap as the protein shakes, but cheaper than chicken and easier to prepare.

It may just be coincidence. Im going to stope the shakes for a couple of weeks, see if I improve, then test it again.
At least I have a few opttions from here to fall back on!

I think both have been shouted around at various times. Neither hold any truth really.

Thanks.

OP I saw a program on tv last week where they were testing various common super market foods. They showed scientific evidence that beans are good for you. I've seen beans mentioned a few times on here too. I am now eating more beans.

Also milk got a mention on the tv program. It contains protein obviously. I think if you eat plenty of eggs and beans and tuna and drink milk then thats a good baseline.

... but then you'll see/read other sources that'll dispute that and recommend you ditch all grains and dairy. e.g. paleo
Best to find what suits you and stick with it. thumbup

I try to eat plenty of beans but just can't stand the after affects.
