MrsC needs a new car, she's got a C2 at the moment and she's never really bonded with it. To put this in perspective, her ideal dream car would be a Polo from around 1996 vintage, which she thinks is the nicest-looking hatchback ever made.....ahem, moving swiftly on;

So, we need a hatchback, 3 or 5 door immaterial, not too big (Polo-ish size) but needs to accommodate our GSD (who travelled in the Polo previously and the Citroen now), doesn't need a massive engine but needs to cope with a regular trip to the MIL which is 100 miles each way. Budget is £3-4k. Reliability and dependability a must.

I don't know where to start. Maybe a look at the NCAP results will steer me.

What do you suggest?

MY Mrs has a A class and for what it is its great car, for your money you'll get the later shape model plenty of room inside without being huge outside, , high seating position is loved by the misses and makes entry and exit easy without having to crouch down. we've been to Devon in ours (280 miles) without any complaints, seats are very comfy

FIAT Grande Punto Dynamic. Your budget will get you something with lowish miles from around 2007. One of the few shopping trolleys that actually look quite nice. Also still in production in (uglier) Evo guise. No great thrill to drive though.

A SEAT Ibiza, either the TDI 130, or the FR 1.8T 150 would get my vote. Your budget should pick you up a decent 2005-06 one.

I like the Merc suggestion. The Merc and the Punto come up as 5 star cars, but the Ibiza from that age is 4 star - for what any of that is worth!

My ex has had a Jazz for past 8 years and for reliability they don't come much better and it's frugal, she loves it. I've had a Grande Punto out as a hire, which was fine, but I would vote Honda.

This was the other csr on the misses list, the only reason we discounted it was Value for Money, We could get a newer lower miles merc for the same as a jazz, but otherwise a good choice also

I am sure that only pensioners are allowed to drive a Honda Jazz, so I guess it depends on your wife's age.

@Silverbullet - the very same, just toned down a tad!

@LotusOmega - I've heard the Jazz is good but I'd also heard the OAP link, and we're not QUITE there yet.

@dav123 - well, it's the closest you can get to a Polo without buying a Polo I guess.

@doogz - partly, it's just not a lovely car; it's a little tinny, it's not very spritely, and it was bought as something of a stopgap/crisis get-out at the time, ie we needed something quickly, and a friend was selling. On top of that, she had a minor shunt where a bike side-swiped her. The only damage was a scuff to the wing and a cracked bumper but it's put her off the car despite it having nothing to do woth either her or the car. negative connotations, I guess.

@covmutley - well, if you don't know with a name like that!! German Shepherd (or Alsatian if you were in the war!).

Exactly. Needn't be quite that old though, they made them in the same shape (Mk III) till 2002 (with a bit of a facelift in '99). With 3-4k to spend you'd have your pick of the low mileage FVWSH examples that mostly sat on a granny's drive for the past decade. 4 star EURO NCAP for the facelifted models.

I've been told many times that the facelift model was a disaster in terms of reliability - built in a different location, I believe, and suffered for that?

Does she require a little fun and urgency from her iccle hatch?

How about a Suzuki Ignis Sport or a Toyota Yaris T-Sport?

Your budget should get an immaculate example.

She won't - but I'll drive it occasionally!
